Adolescent transport and unintentional injuries: a systematic analysis using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Amy E. Peden et al.

Summary: The study reports trends in injury-related mortality and morbidity among adolescents aged 10-24 years over the past three decades. In 2019, transport and unintentional injuries combined accounted for a significant number of deaths and DALYs among adolescents. While global mortality rates for both types of injuries declined, there was an increase in deaths in low-SDI countries. In high-SDI countries, there was a reduction in transport injury DALYs but little change in unintentional injury DALYs from 2010 to 2019.

Self-regulation and tailgating behaviours among young drivers

Michelle Nicolls et al.

Summary: Young drivers aged 17 to 25 are more likely to engage in tailgating behavior, which has been attributed to a significant number of rear-end crashes. This study utilizes self-determination theory to understand the self-regulation behind tailgating among young drivers, and the results suggest that external and internal regulation, as well as aggressive driving traits, play a role in predicting the frequency of tailgating behavior.

Trevor Bailey et al.

Summary: The best practice for learning to drive programs should be evidence-based and incorporate a range of lower and higher-order skills outlined in the internationally recognized Goals for Driver Education (GDE) matrix. An evaluation checklist with 18 practices was developed to review the Keys2drive program, which aimed to determine the alignment with best practice according to the checklist criteria.

A complex system of learning to drive: The instructor's perspective

Natalie Watson-Brown et al.

Summary: Driving instructors play a crucial role in enhancing young drivers' safe driving skills, but research often overlooks their perspectives. Instructors' interactions with parents and learners contribute to the success of graduated driver licensing. Understanding the underlying rationale of GDL requirements is critical for parents and professional instructors to collaborate effectively in improving young drivers' safe driving abilities.

Parents' perceptions of driver education: A theoretically guided qualitative investigation

David Rodwell et al.

Summary: Parents in jurisdictions with Graduated Driver Licensing systems are more likely to outsource teaching vehicle manoeuvring and mastering of traffic situations to professional driving instructors, while believing they can effectively teach goals and contexts for driving and goals for life and skills for living because of their greater knowledge of their child compared to professional educators. The study findings can inform the development of interventions to support parents in supervising learner drivers effectively.
