Factors affecting injury severity at pedestrian crossing locations with Rectangular RAPID Flashing Beacons (RRFB) using XGBoost and random parameters discrete outcome models

Amrita Goswamy et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the effectiveness of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) on crash severity. The study used XGBoost and Random Parameters Discrete Outcome Models (RPDOM) to compare and analyze the impact of RRFB on nighttime, pedestrian, total, and rear-end crashes. The results showed that RRFB has a positive impact on reducing nighttime crashes, but has mixed results for rear-end and overall total crashes.

Safety Effectiveness of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons Pedestrian Enhancement

Amrita Goswamy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the safety effectiveness of existing rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) installed in Florida between 2013 and 2018. The findings showed that RRFBs have the potential to reduce 69% of total pedestrian crashes, but do not have a positive effect on total vehicular crashes or rear-end crashes. Additionally, an economic analysis indicated a benefit to cost ratio of approximately 85.5 for the implementation of RRFBs.

Estimating effectiveness of speed reduction measures for pedestrian crossing treatments using an empirically supported speed choice modeling framework

Summary: This study assesses the effectiveness of pedestrian crossing treatments (PHBs and RRFBs) on drivers' speeding behavior and finds that PHBs can effectively reduce drivers' speed while RRFBs have lesser effect. It suggests the importance of educating drivers on PHBs and installing RRFBs on roads with specific conditions.

Using closed-circuit television cameras to analyze traffic safety at intersections based on vehicle key points detection

Mohamed Abdel-Aty et al.

Summary: This study proposes a framework named NMEDS for road safety diagnostics using video data from CCTV cameras. The framework reconstructs vehicles' key points and calculates the post-encroachment time (PET) to analyze the safety of the within-intersection area. Comparisons with two counterparts show that the proposed framework obtains more accurate vehicle trajectories and identifies significantly dangerous locations.

Summary: This research developed safety performance functions and identified crash hotspots based on estimated vulnerable road users' exposure. XGBoost was found to be the best method for estimating exposure, and crash prediction models were developed using exposure variables which showed significant influences on different types of crashes.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on the critical factors influencing gap acceptance of pedestrians in midblock street crossings, finding that vehicle speed, gap size, and frequency of attempts significantly impact pedestrians' decision-making, while waiting time has no significant impact on crossing odds.

Exploring pedestrian surrogate safety measures by road geometry at midblock crosswalks: A perspective under mixed traffic conditions

Avinash Chaudhari et al.

Summary: This study evaluates pedestrian safety at urban midblock crosswalk using different surrogate safety measures, including vehicle crossing speed, post encroachment time (PET), yielding compliance of drivers and pedestrians, and conflict rate. The number of conflicts increase with higher vehicle crossing speed, making pedestrians vulnerable while crossing the road. The yielding behavior varies based on the approaching vehicle's speed and road geometry, and conflicts increase with lower pedestrian crossing speed.
