The political economy of energy transition: The role of globalization and governance in the adoption of clean cooking fuels and technologies

Alex O. Acheampong et al.

Summary: The need for integration and governance to promote a clean energy economy is crucial, especially in developing countries with reliance on dirty fuels for cooking. This study examines the impact of globalization and governance on clean fuel adoption in sub-Saharan Africa, finding that both play significant roles. Also, the influence of political leaders varies, with right-wing leaders contributing most to clean fuel adoption.

Are sustainable investments interdependent? The international evidence

Nawazish Mirza et al.

Summary: The concerns over climate change and environmental degradation have prompted stakeholders to focus on sustainable investments, which have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. This research examines the interdependence of sustainable investments across multiple countries using a network approach. The study finds that France is the main risk transmitter while Japan and Taiwan are risk receivers in international markets. The centrality network highlights the significance of sustainable investments in European countries due to their efforts against climate change. The volatility in gold prices is identified as the key driver of interdependence in sustainable investments.

Modelling the integrated achievement of clean cooking access and climate mitigation goals: An energy systems optimization approach

A. F. Hollands et al.

Summary: The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal target 7.1, to provide universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy by 2030, needs to be achieved alongside global greenhouse gas emissions reductions. The continued reliance of 2.6 billion people on solid fuel for cooking and heating has significant environmental impacts. However, current decarbonization models lack a detailed pathway for universal clean cooking access, which restricts the representation of the interconnected transitions of mitigating climate change and achieving universal energy access. This study presents a novel methodology for incorporating residential cooking pathways into the TIMES energy systems optimization model framework, using India as a proof-of-concept case study to explore solutions for clean cooking access in the context of reduced GHG emissions. The model presented in this study is published and publicly available.

How do clean fuels and technology-based energy poverty affect carbon emissions? New evidence from eighteen developing countries

Wang Yahong et al.

Summary: Clean fuels and technology-based energy are crucial for sustainable economic growth and development. However, the relationship between clean fuels and technology-based energy poverty and carbon emissions has been understudied. This study uses panel data from eighteen developing countries in Asia to examine the impact of clean fuels and technology-based energy poverty on carbon emissions. The empirical findings suggest that energy poverty positively affects carbon emissions in Asian developing countries. Additionally, economic growth, trade, and population also contribute to carbon emissions and negatively impact environmental quality. Based on these findings, policy implications recommend increasing investments in clean fuels and technologies by the governments of targeted countries.

An Introspective Analysis of Inclusive Growth in Africa, With an Eminence on the Influence of Governance and Financial Development Interaction

Kaodui Li et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between financial development and six distinct governance indicators, as well as their combination, with inclusive growth in 48 African economies from 2000 to 2019. The findings showed that the interaction of financial development with corruption control is crucial for inclusive growth in middle-income countries. The interaction of financial development with political stability and absence of violence/terrorism, as well as the overall governance, is relevant to inclusive growth in Africa as a whole and middle-income countries. However, the interaction of financial development with voice and accountability, and the interaction of financial development with rule of law are relevant to inclusive growth in all country groupings.

Greening the globe: Uncovering the impact of environmental policy, renewable energy, and innovation on ecological footprint

Michael Appiah et al.

Summary: This study examines the effectiveness of environmental policy in reducing ecological footprint while considering the roles of renewable energy and innovation. Employing a cross-sectional autoregressive distributed lags to analyze panel data of 29 OECD countries from 1990 to 2020, the study finds that environmental policy significantly reduces ecological footprint among OECD countries, with its efficacy contingent upon bio-capacity surplus/deficit and the level of industrialization. The study also reveals that renewable energy has a favourable impact on ecological footprint reduction, while innovation improves the environmental quality of OECD countries. However, population density and industrialization were found to decrease and increase ecological footprint, respectively. The study's findings demonstrate bi-directional causation between ecological footprint and all variables except for economic growth, and are robust under the conditions of short-run heterogeneity, long-run homogeneity, and cross-sectional dependence.

The findings show that human capital has a negative effect on the ecological footprint in developed economies, while it is insignificant in emerging economies. Bio-capacity has a positive impact on the ecological footprint in emerging economies in both the short and long term, and only in the short term in developed economies. Economic growth and energy use have a detrimental effect on environmental quality in both groups of countries.

Summary: This study examines the time- and frequency-spillovers between global sustainable investments and analyzes the influence of global risk factors on the short- and long-run connectedness in these investments. The results show significant time-frequency asymmetries in return spillovers, with Germany, France, Netherlands, and the UK as the primary shock transmitters. Negative returns propagate more intensely than positive ones, and the COVID19 and VIX remain influential in the long run. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the dynamics of connectedness in sustainable investments for socially responsible investors and their potential impact on climate change mitigation.

Dynamic and frequency spillovers between green bonds, oil and G7 stock markets: Implications for risk management

Walid Mensi et al.

Summary: This study examines the dynamic and frequency spillovers between global Green Bonds (GBs), WTI oil, and G7 stock markets using the time-frequency spillover index and wavelet coherency approach. The results show that the spillovers are dynamic and crisis-sensitive. Adding GBs and oil futures to stock portfolios reduces spillover size during turmoil periods. Short-term spillovers represent the largest proportion of the total spillovers. A significant increase in spillovers is observed during the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak. Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK are net transmitters of spillovers, while Japan and GBs are net recipients, regardless of time horizons. Oil and the US stock market shift from net contributors to net recipients in medium and long terms. Wavelet coherence analysis reveals significant co-movements between G7 stock markets and both oil and GBs, particularly in medium and long terms and during the COVID-19 spread. GBs provide higher diversification benefits than oil in the short term. The hedge effectiveness of crude oil is higher than GBs, regardless of time horizons.

Environmental regulations, political risk and consumption-based carbon emissions: Evidence from OECD economies

Taimoor Hassan et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of environmental policy stringency, political risk, and their interaction on consumption-based carbon emissions (CBCE) in 24 advanced OECD economies from 1990 to 2020. The findings suggest that imports, gross domestic product, and stringency of environment policies stimulate CBCE in the short run. In the long run, a unit improvement in political risk and its interaction with environmental policy stringency lead to an increase in CBCE. The study concludes that the current environmental policies of OECD member states are not effectively limiting CBCE, and restructuring of these policies is necessary to achieve genuine emissions reduction goals.
