Beautiful Seems Good, But Perhaps Not in Every Way: Linking Attractiveness to Moral Evaluation Through Perceived Vanity

Da Eun Han et al.

Summary: Previous research has shown a correlation between beauty and goodness, but the relationship is inconsistent when it comes to moral goodness. This research reveals a possible reason for this inconsistency, demonstrating that attractiveness can be perceived as both morally good and morally bad. The association between attractiveness and vanity has a negative effect on moral judgments, while the association between attractiveness and sociability has a positive effect. In addition, vanity and sociability mutually suppress the effects of attractiveness on moral judgments. Overall, this study highlights the complex interplay between different elements of person perception.
