Conducting interactive experiments on Toloka

Summary: The popularity of online behavioral experiments has been growing steadily even before the COVID-19 pandemic. Lockdowns made online studies the only available option for behavioral economists, sociologists, and political scientists. The intensive use of popular platforms like mTurk harmed data quality. However, even before the quality crisis caused by the pandemic, online studies had limitations in scope and real-time interactions between participants were hard to achieve. By using the relatively unknown crowdsourcing platform, Toloka, several successful multi-round interactive experiments were conducted. Toloka's substantial online population, participants' limited exposure to sociological surveys and behavioral studies, and convenient application programming interface make it a valuable addition to an experimentalist's toolbox for running behavioral studies requiring real-time interactions.

Identifying cow - level factors and farm characteristics associated with locomotion scores in dairy cows using cumulative link mixed models

Summary: Lameness is a significant issue in intensively managed dairy herds globally, with negative impacts on animal welfare and economic viability. Factors such as low body condition, elevated somatic cell count, severe hock lesions, increasing parity, absence of pasture access, and poor udder cleanliness are associated with higher locomotion scores. Additionally, breed, observer, and season also influence locomotion scores. The use of locomotion scores instead of a dichotomised response variable provides a more detailed understanding of the complex nature of gait disturbances in dairy cows.

How the expertise heuristic accelerates decision-making and credibility judgments in social media by means of effort reduction

Summary: Real-time communication and unlimited information distribution in social media, along with the absence of editorial supervision, pose challenges for recipients' credibility evaluations and information selection. The source's expertise has emerged as an important factor in these evaluations. While previous studies suggest that credibility judgments in social media are guided by heuristics, they have not thoroughly examined the attributes and prerequisites of heuristic decision-making. This study investigates the influence of expertise on credibility judgments and the choice of information sources using a two-alternative choice paradigm, finding that the presence of expertise cues significantly reduces response time but does not completely override the influence of additional information.

Modeling crashes involving children, finite mixture cumulative link mixed model

Summary: Despite previous studies mainly focusing on child seatbelt status, this research in Wyoming identified various factors contributing to the severity of crashes involving children. By extending the CLM to a random effect model with objective hierarchy through FMM, the study found significant improvements in model fit and highlighted the impact of safety equipment, collision type, and drivers' characteristics and actions on the severity of child crashes. Results emphasized that drivers' behaviors are the main causes of higher severity levels in child crashes. Extensive discussion on implications and statistical methods were provided in the manuscript.
