Modern slavery in the criminal family firm: misrecognition and symbolic violence in recruitment and retention practices

Summary: The purpose of this study is to explore the nature of recruitment and retention practices in criminal family firms and explain the coercive nature of these practices. The findings suggest that the trusting relationships found in legitimate family firms are replicated in criminal businesses. The study also proposes that Bourdieu's concepts of symbolic violence and misrecognition can be used to explain worker exploitation in family firms.
