HETEROGENEITY OF GLUTAMATERGIC SYNAPSES: CELLULARMECHANISMS AND NETWORK CONSEQUENCES

Carolin Wichmann et al.

Summary: Chemical synapses are cell-cell contacts specialized in mediating communication between neurons. They are the smallest computational unit of the brain and can be divided into excitatory, inhibitory, and modulatory categories, each with diverse structures and functions referred to as synapse heterogeneity. Synaptic vesicles, the active zone, the synaptic cleft, the postsynaptic density, and glial processes associated with the synapse are the main building blocks for this heterogeneity. Understanding synapse heterogeneity can provide insights into the functional diversity of neuronal networks.

tDCS-Induced Memory Reconsolidation Effects: Analysis of Prominent Predicting Factors

Maria Cotelli et al.

Summary: Memory impairment is a common cognitive complaint in middle-aged and elderly adults. This study found that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left prefrontal cortex can enhance delayed memory retrieval in older adults with subjective memory complaints and mild cognitive impairment. Cognitive reserve and education level also affect memory retrieval.

A questionnaire to collect unintended effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation: A consensus based approach

A. Giustiniani et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a questionnaire, named TMSens_Q, for reporting unintended effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The Delphi procedure was used to reach consensus among TMS experts, and the questionnaire was publicized for further input. The structured TMS questionnaire and standardized reporting will enhance the safety monitoring of TMS and improve data collection quality and interpretation of experimental findings.

While older adults are less likely than younger adults to use memories of single past experiences when choosing between options, they more consistently use their real-world knowledge, even when it is irrelevant.

Effects of rTMS treatment on global cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Tianjiao Zhang et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis included 9 studies and found that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can significantly improve global cognitive function in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the effects can last for an extended duration. High-frequency rTMS targeted to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) had the best therapeutic effect, with the effects lasting for more than 1 month after treatment. There were no significant differences in dropout rate or adverse effect rate between the rTMS and control groups.

Use of machine learning to identify functional connectivity changes in a clinical cohort of patients at risk for dementia

Ying Shen et al.

Summary: This study utilized the machine learning technique HoTS to diagnose mild cognitive impairment and subjective cognitive decline, and investigated the neural network features associated with cognitive decline. The results showed that the language networks were most notably associated with the diagnosis, and several central networks and sensory brain regions were predictors of poor cognitive performance.

Diagnostic contribution and therapeutic perspectives of transcranial magnetic stimulation in dementia

Vincenzo Di Lazzaro et al.

Summary: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a powerful tool for assessing cortical properties such as excitability, plasticity, and connectivity in humans. TMS has been applied in dementia patients to identify potential markers of pathophysiology and predictors of cognitive decline. Combining multiple TMS measures and neurophysiological indices can support clinical diagnosis and predict disease progression. Repetitive TMS has shown promise as a therapeutic intervention for improving cognition in AD patients, especially at mild stages of the disease. Additional brain imaging and electrophysiological tools are needed to optimize TMS treatment protocols for individual patients with dementia.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Improving Cognitive Function in Patients With Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Systematic Review

Lijuan Jiang et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis revealed that rTMS may significantly improve global cognitive function and memory in patients with MCI. Effects were more pronounced with high-frequency rTMS, targeting both hemispheres and with a high number of treatment sessions. However, no significant improvement was found in executive function and attention. Additionally, rTMS was associated with a higher rate of mild adverse effects, while dropout rates did not significantly differ between rTMS and control groups.

Precision Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Over the Left Parietal Cortex Improves Memory in Alzheimer's Disease: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Sham-Controlled Study

Yanli Jia et al.

Summary: After a 2-week treatment, Alzheimer's disease patients who underwent precision repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the left parietal cortex showed significant improvement in memory and cognitive function compared to those in the sham treatment group. This indicates that targeting the left parietal cortex may offer a potential therapy to enhance cognitive function, particularly memory, in AD patients.

tDCS-Induced Memory Reconsolidation Effects and Its Associations With Structural and Functional MRI Substrates in Subjective Cognitive Decline

Lidia Vaque-Alcazar et al.

Summary: Research findings suggest that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (l-DLPFC) can enhance episodic memory in individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD). MRI results revealed that those with superior tDCS-induced effects on memory reconsolidation exhibited higher left temporal lobe thickness and greater intrinsic functional connectivity within the default-mode network. This implies that individuals with more preserved structural and functional integrity may benefit from such interventions, promoting the maintenance of cognitive function in a population at risk for dementia.

Episodic Memory Encoding and Retrieval in Face-Name Paired Paradigm: An fNIRS Study

Qian Yu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of fNIRS to differentiate cortical activity underlying encoding and retrieval during a paired-associate learning paradigm. It found that task difficulty was associated with greater neural activity in the bilateral prefrontal cortex, while task novelty was linked to increased activation in occipital regions. This suggests that fNIRS has the potential to enhance episodic memory assessments in clinical settings.
