Summary: This study used a multi-method assessment to evaluate the psychological and physiological status of Cape Town youth in South Africa who have been exposed to violence. The findings suggest that these youth demonstrate overregulation of behavior and emotion, as well as low risk taking propensity. These results challenge the traditional narrative that violence-exposed youth lack regulatory capacity and have a high propensity for risk.

Does Ecology or Character Matter? The Contributions of Childhood Unpredictability, Harshness, and Temperament to Life History Strategies in Adolescence

Summary: Life history theory suggests that harsh and unpredictable childhood environments can influence adolescent reproductive strategies, with children high in sociability or reactivity more likely to engage in sexual activity and risk-taking behaviors. Adolescents who experienced unpredictability in childhood may explicitly want fewer children later in life. Additionally, children who grew up in harsher environments or had higher sociability levels were found to have more and earlier romantic relationships during adolescence.

Exploring the Relationship of Acculturative Stress and Anxiety Symptoms in Latino Youth

Summary: This study examines the complex relationship between mindfulness, negative automatic thoughts, acculturative stress, and anxiety in Latino youth. The results show that mindfulness can buffer the relationship between acculturative stress and automatic thoughts, but exacerbates the relationship between acculturative stress and anxiety. Additionally, mindfulness indirectly reduces the impact of acculturative stress on anxiety symptoms through negative automatic thoughts.
