Mental Health of Royal Canadian Mounted Police at the Start of the Cadet Training Program

R. Nicholas Carleton et al.

Summary: Fifty percent of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers have self-reported symptoms of mental disorders. This study aimed to estimate the mental health of RCMP cadets at the start of their training program (CTP) and test for sociodemographic differences. The results showed that the prevalence of current mental disorders based on self-reported symptoms was higher (15.0%) compared to the general population (10.1%), but lower (6.3%) based on clinical interviews. Females were more likely to score higher on self-report mental disorder measures compared to males.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Study: protocol for a prospective investigation of mental health risk and resilience factors

Summary: This protocol paper describes the RCMP Study, which aims to reduce posttraumatic stress injuries (PTSI) among public safety personnel (PSP) by improving evidence-based assessments, treatments, and training. The study involves developing an ongoing assessment system, evaluating associations between demographic variables and PTSI, longitudinally assessing individual differences associated with PTSI, augmenting Cadet Training Program, and comparing the impact of augmented training condition versus standard training condition. The study results are expected to benefit the mental health of all participants and reduce PTSI among all who serve.

Psychophysiological assessment of stress reactivity and recovery in anxiety disorders

David F. Tolin et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with social anxiety disorder showed heightened psychophysiological reactivity, while those with panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder exhibited attenuated reactivity. Physiological recovery was slower in patients with generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder compared to healthy controls. Patients with all anxiety disorders had diminished change in high frequency heart rate variability compared to healthy controls.
