Selecting repertoire for music teaching: Findings from Norwegian schools of music and arts

Summary: Norway was the first country to legislate the provision of music and arts schools, requiring every municipality to run such schools. Despite the lack of official regulations on teaching content, teachers have the freedom to choose content and modes of instruction. Findings from a survey of music teachers show that a wide range of musical genres and styles are used as teaching content, with teachers having the most influence on the selection, influenced by their own preferences and taste.

Health education for musicians in the UK: a qualitative evaluation

Summary: This paper reports the evaluation of a 5-month health education programme for first-year undergraduate music students in the UK. The qualitative analysis of interviews with 20 participants shows that the participants viewed the programme positively, finding it relevant and informative, appreciating the intimate nature of the seminars. They also reported changes in their behaviors related to preventative health and music practice.

Validity and reliability of the Musicians' Health Literacy Questionnaire, MHL-Q19

Summary: The high prevalence of musicians' physical and mental performance-related health issues has been a persistent problem. In an effort to decrease these issues, researchers developed a new health literacy tool for musicians and evaluated its validity and reliability. The tool showed acceptable internal consistency and test-retest reliability, indicating promising results for addressing musicians' health issues.

Anxiety and Depression Symptom Level and Psychotherapy Use Among Music and Art Students Compared to the General Student Population

Studying Music During the Coronavirus Pandemic: Conditions of Studying and Health-Related Challenges

Summary: The study found that the coronavirus pandemic resulted in a decrease in practicing hours and an increase in stressful thoughts and feelings among music students. Students were mostly satisfied with the university's pandemic measures. The only significant predictor of mental health status was a general fear of health problems, and mental health status did not differ significantly between students surveyed in 2019 and 2020.
