Neotropical bromeliads as food sources for birds: a systematic review and perspectives on the management of ecological interactions

Summary: The loss of interactions and ecosystem functions due to species decline and extinction in the Anthropocene is a significant concern. Bromeliads play an important role in providing food sources for at least 162 bird species in the Neotropics, thus enhancing local bird diversity. Restoring the abundance of bromeliads can be a relevant conservation tool for birds and contribute to the maintenance of species and interaction diversity.

Summary: Despite the prevalence of bromeliads as a water source for birds in the Neotropics, there is limited scientific literature on this topic. This study documents the white-throated thrush and the dusky-legged guan drinking water from bromeliads in the Atlantic Forest biome in south-eastern Brazil, and provides a summary of bird drinking behavior from bromeliads in Brazil. The current records indicate a lack of knowledge on bromeliads as a water source for birds outside of the Atlantic Forest biome, and further research is needed to explore this in other biomes such as the Amazonian forest and the Caatinga.

Susceptibility to Predation Varies with Body Mass, Foraging Niche, and Anti-Predator Responses among Bird Species

Summary: Predation can have a major impact on animal populations, and this study examines the factors that affect susceptibility to predation among species. Using estimates of predation rates from a large number of radio-tracking studies in birds, the study finds that species facing fewer predators and those with effective anti-predator responses experience lower predation rates. More research is needed to broaden the range of species and habitats included in radio-tracking studies for a fuller understanding of the factors affecting susceptibility to predation.

The Amazon Epiphyte Network: A First Glimpse Into Continental-Scale Patterns of Amazonian Vascular Epiphyte Assemblages

Summary: Epiphytes in Amazonia are understudied and their distributional patterns and conservation priorities are assessed in this study. The study compiled a large database of epiphyte plots across Amazonia and found that the vascular epiphyte assemblages (VEA) exhibit spatial and ecological variations based on major Amazonian habitat types. Furthermore, the study identifies sampling gaps in the highly threatened southern Amazonian deforestation belt.

Summary: The updated checklist of birds in Brazil now includes 1971 species, with 11 known only from undocumented records. The list provides details on each species' occurrence status and subspecies information in Brazilian territory, as well as explanations for taxonomic changes, nomenclatural corrections, and other modifications. A total of 90 species have been added while 8 have been removed from the list.
