Superhydrophobic, photothermal, MXene/PEI composite film with anti-icing and deicing properties

Yiqing Xue et al.

Summary: In this study, a MXene/PEI superhydrophobic anti-/deicing composite film was prepared by laser etching method. The film demonstrated both anti-icing and active deicing properties, with a freezing time of droplets on the surface 7 times longer than untreated PEI film. When activated by near infrared light, the surface temperature rapidly increased, reaching an equilibrium temperature of up to 188 degrees C. The photothermal behavior effectively melted the ice droplets within 19 seconds, providing efficient and stable deicing effect.

Enhanced water transportation on a superhydrophilic serial cycloid-shaped pattern

Defeng Yan et al.

Summary: SDWT is an ideal water transportation method with potential applications in aerospace and ship fields. However, the existing SDWT suffers from slow water transportation velocity due to its geometry structure configuration. To overcome this limitation, a new superhydrophilic serial cycloid-shaped pattern (SSCP) was developed, inspired by the micro-cavity shape of the Nepenthes. Experimental results showed that water transportation velocity on the SSCP was faster than on the superhydrophilic serial wedge-shaped pattern (SSWP), and the SSCP exhibited superior capability in long-distance water transportation, gravity resistant water transportation, heat transfer, and fog collection.

The effect of mechanical and thermal stresses on the performance of lubricated icephobic coatings during cyclic icing/deicing tests

Valentina Donadei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance and durability of lubricated polymer coatings under cyclic icing/deicing tests. The results showed stable icephobic behavior for some coatings, while others experienced a decrease in performance over the cycles. Cyclic testing caused mechanical damage to the surfaces, resulting in increased surface roughness and reduced hydrophobicity.

Bioinspired solar anti-icing/de-icing surfaces based on phase-change materials

Siyu Sheng et al.

Summary: The study investigates a solar phase-change material (SPCM) composed of expanded graphite (EG)/paraffin/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) that can effectively collect and store solar energy for anti-icing/de-icing purposes. The SPCM surface demonstrates excellent anti-icing/de-icing properties, maintaining a high de-icing rate and long freeze-delay time even at ultra-low temperatures. This research provides a promising approach for utilizing solar energy in anti-icing/de-icing applications.

Dynamic responses of steel plates under repeated ice impacts

Wei Cai et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamic responses of steel plates under repeated ice impacts using experimental and numerical methods. The results from the experimental impact tests and finite element simulations show that the plastic deformation of the steel plates effectively reflects the damage conditions in the structures during ice impact events. The energy dissipation of ice and the energy absorption of the plates are also studied, and the energy criterion for pseudo shakedown phenomenon is re-examined. These findings provide useful information for evaluating the structural safety of ice-classed ships.
