A comprehensive overview of emerging techniques and chemometrics for authenticity and traceability of animal-derived food

Huiping Ye et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the current research status of authenticity and geographical origin traceability of animal-derived food. It covers various aspects such as geographical origin, feeding ingredients, adulteration of substitutes, and physical and chemical properties. Stable isotope ratio analysis and element analysis are commonly used traceability techniques, while spectroscopic techniques have the advantages of quick response, low cost, and non-destructiveness. Instrument technology combined with chemometrics is the key method for origin traceability and authenticity. There is also a new trend of origin traceability through analyzing inedible parts of animal-derived food. Understanding the authenticity and geographical origin traceability of animal-derived food is of great importance for food safety.

Use of stable isotopes to characterise New Zealand butter in a global market

Karyne M. Rogers et al.

Summary: Stable isotopes were used to characterize samples of New Zealand butter and accurately distinguish it from butter of other origins. The unique isotope signatures of New Zealand butter allowed it to be differentiated from Australian and Irish butter, but not completely from them. Stable isotopes offer a reliable tool to identify mislabeled New Zealand butter in key international export markets.

Characterization of Beef Coming from Different European Countries through Stable Isotope (H, C, N, and S) Ratio Analysis

Luana Bontempo et al.

Summary: The increasing number of food fraud cases has made it imperative to ensure the geographical origin of food samples. Stable isotope ratio analysis can differentiate food products based on their origin and production systems. The TRACE project analyzed the stable isotope ratios of 227 authentic beef samples, revealing that the environmental conditions of the rearing areas can cause sample clustering. The stable isotope measurements also showed statistical differences in coastal and inland regions, production sites at different latitudes, geological variations, and farming systems related to the animals' diet.

Stable Isotope and Element Profiling for Determining the Agroclimatic Origin of Cow Milk within a Tropical Country

Maheshika Kalpage et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the possibility of using stable isotope composition and elemental fingerprints to determine the agroclimatic origin of milk produced in different agroclimatic zones of Sri Lanka. Significant variations were observed in stable isotope ratios and elemental fingerprints of milk samples obtained from different agroclimatic zones. Linear discriminant analysis successfully differentiated cow milk produced from four agroclimatic zones based on stable isotope ratios, and the inclusion of elemental ratios enhanced the discriminating ability.

Manure as waste and food as feed: Environmental challenges on Chinese farms

Yue Wang et al.

Summary: The rapid intensification of animal and crop production in Chinese dairy farms has led to high nutrient losses and food-feed competition. This study found that Chinese dairy farms heavily rely on imported feed and are not closely connected to crop production. On-farm croplands play a minor role in feed supply but are overloaded with cattle manure. The average nutrient use efficiencies were low, indicating inefficient utilization of nutrients. Farms with higher milk yields and moderate concentrate use performed better in nutrient use efficiencies and food-feed conversion ratios.

Are Local Dairy Products Better? Using Principal Component Analysis to Investigate Consumers' Perception towards Quality, Sustainability, and Market Availability

Valentina Maria Merlino et al.

Summary: This study investigated consumer perceptions of quality and sustainability of local dairy products, highlighting the importance of product quality in the geographic area and the higher demand for availability and visibility of local dairy products on the market. The results also showed that factors such as gender, age, and education significantly influenced consumer preferences for local dairy products.

Warming and redistribution of nitrogen inputs drive an increase in terrestrial nitrous oxide emission factor

E. Harris et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic nitrogen inputs have significant negative impacts on the environment, especially through the emission of the important greenhouse gas N2O. The shifts in terrestrial nitrogen loss pathways driven by global change are highly uncertain. This study presents a model that quantifies terrestrial nitrogen losses and N2O emission factors, revealing that atmospheric deposition inputs are the main cause of anthropogenic N2O emissions from soils. The predicted increase in fertilizer use in emerging economies will further accelerate N2O-driven climate warming, unless targeted mitigation measures are implemented.

Stable isotope ratio analysis of lactose as a possible potential geographical tracer of milk

Matteo Perini et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the potential use of stable isotope ratio analysis of milk lactose as a geographic tracer. The results show that the δ13C values of milk are closely correlated with the animal's diet, while the (D/H)I ratio is more correlated with the δ18O of drinking water and therefore the geographical origin of the milk. Moreover, significant differences in the (D/H)II ratio were found when different yeasts were used for alcohol fermentation. Additionally, the δ18O of the bulk milk and the water drunk by the animals are closely correlated, with variations depending on the farming practices.

Stable isotope profile (C, N, O, S) of Irish raw milk: Baseline data for authentication

Roisin O'Sullivan et al.

Summary: Grass-based milk production is a significant aspect of Irish agricultural output, with stable isotope ratio analysis used to characterize the Irish milk pool. The isotopic values obtained provide insights into the impact of grass inputs and concentrate feed inputs on the isotopic composition of Irish milk. Seasonal variations and interactions between feed types and seasons were observed, with potential implications for discriminating Irish milk and dairy products from those of other countries.
