Hermetic and Bioresorbable Packaging Materials for MEMS Implantable Pressure Sensors: A Review

Zhiwei You et al.

Summary: Pressure sensors based on MEMS technology are widely used for measuring internal pressure in the human body due to their small size, lightweight, and energy-efficient characteristics. Hermetic packaging materials such as metal and glass are commonly utilized to protect the implants from corrosion caused by body fluids. Materials with low permeability, like liquid crystal polymers and parylene, are suitable for short-term sealing (less than a year). The failure of the packaging is determined by water penetration and interface adhesion, which can be predicted through helium leakage tests and water concentration tests. Additionally, bioabsorbable materials can be beneficial for short-term implantable devices to prevent tissue damage and infection caused by long-term implantation or secondary removal surgery.

Implants with Sensing Capabilities

Mladen Veletic et al.

Summary: Due to the increasing number of surgical procedures and an aging human population, more biomedical devices are being implanted each year. While implants have significant benefits, there is a risk of complications from foreign materials in the body. To address this challenge, advancements in implantable sensors can detect minor changes early and provide opportunities for intervention. Integrating sensors with implants enables real-time monitoring and improves implant function. Although sensor integration has mainly been applied in cardiovascular, neural, and orthopedic implants, there are still needs to be addressed. Sensor-integrating implants are still in their early stages but some have already reached the clinical stage. By taking an interdisciplinary approach, these sensor-integrating devices will become more efficient and pave the way for future clinical translation.
