Age and growth assessment of the near-threatened fish Rita rita (Siluriformes: Bagridae) in the Ganges basin

Ankita Ankita et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the best body structure for age and growth estimation of Rita rita. The results indicated that vertebrae were the most suitable structure for age estimation, and growth bands appeared to form annually from May to September. Overall, this species showed moderate growth in the studied rivers, and vertebrae were recommended for age estimation.

Reproductive Characteristics of Pseudecheneis sulcatus (Siluriforms: Sisoridae) in the Lower Yarlung Zangbo River, Tibet

Pengcheng Lin et al.

Summary: The present research provides new insights into the reproductive biology of Pseudecheneis sulcatus found in the biodiversity hotspot of the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon. Important aspects of its life-history traits, including maturation age, fertility, spawning season, and maximum body size, were investigated. The study found that P. sulcatus spawned synchronously in spring and early summer, with low fecundity and large oocytes. This research contributes to the understanding of how this species adapts to the unique canyon environment and may be useful for the development of a sustainable conservation plan in the lower reach of the Yarlung Zangbo River.

Beak Microstructure Estimates of the Age, Growth, and Population Structure of Purpleback Flying Squid (Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis) in the Xisha Islands Waters of the South China Sea

Ziyue Chen et al.

Summary: This study explored the feasibility of using upper beak microstructures to estimate the age of purpleback flying squid. The study determined the age and growth of squid caught in the waters surrounding the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea. The study identified three growth zones, abnormal increments, and erosion in the beak examination. Significant sex differences were found in the relationship between size and age, and exponential models best described the relationships between size and age and body weight for both sexes.

Distribution features of landslides in the Yalong River Basin, Southwest China

Gang Jin et al.

Summary: Landslides are a significant natural hazard with potential harm to human lives and property. Through the application of the contributing weighting method, this study investigated the distribution patterns of large-scale landslides in the Yalong River Basin, identifying specific conditions under which these landslides are more likely to occur.

Age and growth of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) at the confluence of the Parana and Paraguay rivers

Leandro Balboni et al.

Summary: The age and growth of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans were analyzed based on length frequency distribution and growth marks of pectoral spines. Results showed that different growth models are suitable for males and females of the species, suggesting the need for separate studies for each sex and consideration of this characteristic in fishing regulations.
