Morphological and Functional Alterations in Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Liver after Exposure to Two Ecologically Relevant Concentrations of Lead

Rachele Macirella et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the morphological and functional injuries induced in zebrafish liver by low concentrations of Pb. The results showed significant histological alterations and increased injuries with dose and exposure time. Pb administration also resulted in higher lipid content and upregulation of key genes related to metal detoxification and defense against oxidative stress.

Impact of heavy metals on the environment and human health: Novel therapeutic insights to counter the toxicity

Saikat Mitra et al.

Summary: Heavy metals are toxic pollutants that can accumulate in the human body through bioaccumulation. Recent studies have explored treatment options for heavy metal removal, including nanotechnology-based methods, which offer advantages such as a broad linear range, low detection limits, and high sensitivity.

Effects of heavy metals on fish physiology - A review

Md Shahjahan et al.

Summary: The pollution by heavy metals poses a serious threat to the aquatic environment and organisms. This review investigates the effects of heavy metals on fish physiology, including hemato-biochemical properties, immunological parameters, organ histopathology, and molecular mechanisms. These parameters are important bio-monitoring tools for assessing heavy metal toxicity.

On the Geochemistry of the Danube River Sediments (Serbian Sector)

Otilia A. Culicov et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the major elements and trace elements in sediment samples from the Serbian Danube River using INAA. The distribution of major elements was uniform, with little influence from sampling locations. The distribution of trace elements showed similarity to reference samples and the location of the river. The considered contaminating elements exceeded the pollution threshold, indicating significant anthropogenic contamination and raising concerns about the impact on water quality and biota.

Lead impaired immune function and tissue integrity in yellow catfish (Peltobargus fulvidraco) by mediating oxidative stress, inflammatory response and apoptosis

Jie Guo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the toxic effects of waterborne lead exposure on immune organs of yellow catfish, showing that lead exposure led to bioaccumulation, histomorphological alterations, changes in antioxidant status, apoptotic processes, and immune responses. The results suggest that lead exposure can impair immune function and tissue integrity in yellow catfish through oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis.

Temporal variation of biomarkers in common bream Abramis brama (L., 1758) exposed to untreated municipal wastewater in the Danube River in Belgrade, Serbia

Jovana Kostic-Vukovic et al.

Summary: This study conducted on common bream in the Danube River exposed to wastewater discharge in Serbia's capital examined concentrations of metals and metalloids, as well as histopathological alterations in different tissues. The research highlighted gills and liver as reliable organs for studying accumulation and histopathology, showcasing the faster reaction of gills to environmental changes. Common bream proves to be a good indicator of organism health in polluted environments.

EFFECTS OF MELATONIN ON CADMIUM ACCUMULATION AND HAEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS IN CADMIUM INTOXICATED PRUSSIAN CARP (CARASSIUS GIBELIO B.)

Ewa Drag-Kozak et al.

Summary: The study revealed that cadmium concentration in fish tissues and blood increased with exposure duration, which was reduced by melatonin administration and shown to have protective effects against cadmium accumulation. Furthermore, fish exposed to the highest dose of cadmium exhibited significant increases in blood parameters, but melatonin implantation led to improvements in these parameters. Melatonin can be a good strategy to partially alleviate cadmium toxicity.
