Traditional Italian Agri-Food Products: A Unique Tool with Untapped Potential

Adriano Didonna et al.

Summary: The Italian Traditional Agri-food Product (TAP) denomination has potential in promoting local and traditional Italian products, especially in the category of vegetable products and landraces. However, the TAP denomination needs improvement in terms of commercial protection and promotion, and efforts should be made to increase consumer awareness, allocate more financial support, and integrate with regional and private labels to protect the unique characteristics of Italian traditional agri-food products.

Cucurbitaceae genome evolution, gene function, and molecular breeding

Lili Ma et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the genome sequence information, evolutionary relationships, and functional genes associated with important agronomic traits of Cucurbitaceae species. The progress of molecular breeding in cucurbit crops and the potential applications of Cucurbitaceae genome information are also discussed.

Identification of seven undescribed cucurbitacins in Cucumis sativus (cucumber) and their cytotoxic activity

Zhixing Qing et al.

Summary: This study isolated ten cucurbitacin C analogues, including six compounds with inhibitory effects on tumor cell lines. Cucurbitacin C6 and C7 exhibited significant inhibition on HepG2 cell line. Cucumber is an important source of specialized metabolites in the food and medicinal industries.

Screening and identifying cucurbitacins and cucurbitacin glycosides in Cucumis sativus using high-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with in-source fragmentation and alkali adduct ions

Si-Yuan Chen et al.

Summary: This study established a rapid detection method to screen cucurbitacins and cucurbitacin glycosides in cucumber plants using HPLC-Q-TOF-MS technology with in-source fragmentation. The addition of alkali cations to the mobile phase improved ion response, allowing for the identification of various metabolites in cucumber plants.

Enhancement of a Landrace of Carosello (Unripe Melon) through the Use of Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) and Nutritional Characterization of the Fruit Placenta

Onofrio Davide Palmitessa et al.

Summary: The study focused on local 'Carosello' varieties and used LED supplemental lighting to increase yield, although fruit quality was not affected. The exocarp was greener and more yellow than the mesocarp, while the endosperm contained high polyphenol content, proving to be a valuable source of nutraceutical compounds.

Extraseasonal Production in a Soilless System and Characterisation of Landraces of Carosello and Barattiere (Cucumis melo L.)

Annalisa Somma et al.

Summary: Barattiere and Carosello are typical melon landraces of Puglia's biodiversity in Southern Italy, underutilized crops with potential productivity. Morphological characterization and soilless cultivation techniques are important for discriminating and valorizing these landraces.
