Secondary metabolites responses of plants exposed to ozone: an update

Aditya Abha Singh et al.

Summary: Tropospheric ozone (O-3) is a secondary pollutant that induces oxidative stress in plants. They respond to O-3 exposure by activating phenylpropanoid, isoprenoid, and alkaloid pathways, resulting in the synthesis of secondary defense metabolites. Chronic exposure to O-3 shifts carbon flows towards secondary metabolism, enabling plants to cope with stress and achieve homeostasis. This review discusses the impact of O-3 on plant species, including crops, trees, and medicinal plants, focusing on their secondary metabolic pathways, ROS scavenging abilities, and defense mechanisms.

Chronic tropospheric ozone exposure reduces seed yield and quality in spring and winter oilseed rape

Hattie R. Roberts et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of ozone exposure on seed and oil yield of two oilseed rape cultivars under typical European conditions. The results showed that increasing ozone exposure led to decreased seed and oil yield, with different effects on different cultivars. The study suggests that growers may face economic penalties, and the improvement in animal feed quality may not outweigh the decrease in overall yield.

Incorporating in vitro bioaccessibility into human health risk assessment of heavy metals and metalloid (As) in soil and pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.) from greenhouse vegetable production fields in a megacity in Northwest China

Junkang Guo et al.

Summary: The rapid development of greenhouse vegetable production in densely populated areas may lead to heavy metal contamination in soil, posing a threat to human health. The study found that Cd and Cr were common pollutants in GVP fields in Xi'an, with both soil and pak choi presenting health risks due to heavy metal accumulation.

Individual and Interactive Effects of Elevated Ozone and Temperature on Plant Responses

Jong Kyu Lee et al.

Summary: Due to human activities, the concentration of tropospheric ozone has significantly increased in industrialized countries, leading to harmful effects on plants. Elevated temperatures and ozone can both affect plant physiology and biochemistry, but the interactions between these two factors are still controversial.

Effect of different durations of moderate ozone exposure on secondary metabolites ofBrassica campestrisL. ssp.chinensis

Young Jong Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of ozone on early vegetative growth stage Pak-Choi, finding that plant growth was minimally affected while biochemical quality was significantly impacted. Different exposure durations resulted in varied plant reactions to ozone, highlighting the sensitivity of biochemical systems compared to systems controlling plant growth.
