Adherence to a healthy sleep pattern is associated with lower risks of all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer-specific mortality

Tao Zhou et al.

Summary: This study found that a healthy sleep pattern was associated with lower risks of all-cause mortality, mortality from CVD, and cancer mortality. Participants with a favourable sleep pattern had 24-42% lower risks of all-cause and CVD mortality compared to those with an unfavourable sleep pattern. The association was stronger among underweight participants and those with insufficient physical activity.

Summary: Sleep duration of <= 5 h and >= 9 h is associated with higher risks of mortality and cardiovascular diseases, while long sleep duration is also linked to increased cancer risk. Snoring, insomnia, and narcolepsy are independent risk factors for incident cardiovascular diseases.

Diet, Sleep, and Mental Health: Insights from the UK Biobank Study

Piril Hepsomali et al.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the associations between diet and sleep quality/health, as well as mental health symptomatology. Findings suggest positive associations with healthy diet, healthy sleep, and high intake of vegetables, fruits, fish, water, and fiber with sleep and mental health, while processed meat and milk intake were negatively associated. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms by which diet influences sleep and mental health.

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness and Cardiovascular Mortality in US Adults: A NHANES 2005-2008 Follow-Up Study

Jingen Li et al.

Summary: This study found that excessive daytime sleepiness is highly prevalent among US adults and is independently associated with an approximately two-and-a-half-fold increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. Screening for excessive daytime sleepiness may be a simple and cost-effective tool for identifying individuals at high risk of cardiovascular death.
