Rumen and Liver Fluke Infections in Sheep and Goats in Northern and Southern Germany

Uta Alstedt et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution and prevalence of rumen and liver flukes in sheep and goats in Germany. It found that rumen flukes were more common in the north, while liver flukes were more common in the south. Mixed grazing with other ruminants and previous infections with flukes were identified as predictors for the parasitosis. This study is important for the prevention and control of parasite infections.

Chronic Wasting Due to Liver and Rumen Flukes in Sheep

Alexandra Kahl et al.

Summary: Chronic wasting in sheep is often caused by parasitic infections, especially trematode infections. Trematodes infect different organs and harm the host by subsisting on body tissues or fluids, and causing mechanical damage. The development of these parasites relies on intermediate hosts, usually invertebrates. Infections may lead to clinical symptoms such as liver disorders and wasting.

A Universal Approach to Molecular Identification of Rumen Fluke Species Across Hosts, Continents, and Sample Types

Gillian Mitchell et al.

Summary: Rumen flukes are parasitic trematodes that impact domestic and wild ruminants worldwide. Accurate species identification is crucial for understanding their epidemiology and effects on hosts. A universal molecular approach using ITS-2 sequencing has shown promise for identifying rumen fluke species across various hosts and origins.

Rumen (Calicophoron/Paramphistomum spp.) and Liver Flukes (Fasciola hepatica) in Cattle-Prevalence, Distribution, and Impact of Management Factors in Germany

Tanja Forstmaier et al.

Summary: The study revealed prevalence rates of 5.5% for rumen flukes and 9.5% for liver flukes on German cattle farms, with co-infections occurring on 2.1% of farms. Grazing, feeding fresh grass, and organic farming were significantly associated with rumen and liver fluke occurrence.

Paramphistome Species in Water Buffaloes and Intermediate Hosts in the Kizilirmak Delta in Samsun Province, Turkey

Celil Ates et al.

Summary: This study identified Calicophoron daubneyi as the predominant paramphistome species in water buffaloes in the Kizilirmak Delta in Turkey, with P. cervi found in only a few cases. The intermediate host for C. daubneyi was identified as G. truncatula. Molecular identification was successfully used to differentiate between the parasite species at a genetic level.
