COVID-19 in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: A systematic review

Summary: The study aimed to review the literature and identify the epidemiology of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the clinical characteristics of SLE patients with COVID-19, the treatment of COVID-19 in SLE patients, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on SLE patients. A systematic review of 52 studies revealed that the prevalence of COVID-19 infection in SLE patients ranged from 0.0% to 18.1%, with hospitalization rates ranging from 0.24% to 10.6%. COVID-19 infection was found to mimic SLE flare, and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) was ineffective in preventing COVID-19. SLE patients with COVID-19 faced challenges in healthcare access, financial constraints, and psychological distress during the pandemic.

Healthcare Utilization and Costs of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus by Disease Severity in the United States

The results showed that patients with severe SLE had higher annual costs compared to patients with moderate or mild SLE, across all service categories. Access and Cost-Related Nonadherence to Prescription Medications Among Lupus Patients and Controls: The Michigan Lupus Epidemiology and Surveillance Program
