Fabrication and Characterization of Functional Biobased Membranes from Postconsumer Cotton Fabrics and Palm Waste for the Removal of Dyes

Mohd Jahir Khan et al.

Summary: This study explored the utilization of composite membranes made from post-consumer cotton fabrics and palm waste for wastewater treatment. Cellulose nanofibers were produced from waste cotton fabrics and filter paper, and the characteristics of the membranes were analyzed. The membrane made from palm waste had the highest dye removal efficiency, reaching 23% for Congo red and 44% for methylene blue.

Sunlight-Driven Photocatalytic Active Fabrics through Immobilization of Functionalized Doped Titania Nanoparticles

Ume Arfa et al.

Summary: To reduce the harm to the ecosystem caused by frequent washing of textiles, this study proposes the development of sunlight-driven cleaning and antibacterial comfort fabrics by immobilizing functionalized Zn-doped TiO2 nanoparticles. A sol-gel method was used to fabricate the nanoparticles, which were then functionalized and immobilized on cotton fabric using silane coupling agents. The as-functionalized fabrics showed a high potential for sunlight-assisted degradation of selected pollutants, with 95-98% dye degradation achieved within 3 hours of sunlight exposure. The treated fabrics also maintained their comfort and mechanical properties. The reaction pathway followed a first-order kinetic model, with h(+) ions identified as the most influential species for dye degradation.

Multifunctional Finishing of Cotton Fabric with Curcumin Derivatives Coatings Obtained by Sol-Gel Method

Florentina Monica Raduly et al.

Summary: Textile materials with fluorescent, repellent, or antimicrobial properties are increasingly used in common applications. A series of research was carried out on the modification of surfaces with nanosols to improve the performance of textile materials. Coatings with multiple properties were obtained by depositing nanosols on cotton fabrics. These coated fabrics provide a hydrophobic surface, have fluorescent and antimicrobial properties, change color depending on the pH, and maintain their good multifunctional properties even after several washing cycles.

Z-Scheme g-C3N4/Fe3O4/Ag3PO4 @Sep magnetic nanocomposites as heterojunction photocatalysts for green malachite degradation and dynamic molecular studies

R. Haounati et al.

Summary: In this study, a Z-scheme heterostructures' nanocomposite was successfully prepared using a co-precipitation method. The nanocomposite was characterized and found to have Fe3O4, Ag3PO4, and g-C3N4 nanoparticles on the surface of sepiolite. The g-C3N4/Fe3O4/Ag3PO4 @Sep nanocomposite exhibited significantly better photocatalytic performance compared to pure g-C3N4, gC3N4 @Sep, and g-C3N4/Ag3PO4 @Sep. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity was attributed to the synergistic effects of the Z-scheme heterojunction construction, improving light usage and charge carrier migration rate. The study provides important insights into the design and synthesis of Z-scheme nano-composite heterojunctions for efficient photocatalytic applications.

Supachok Tanpichai et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared cross-linked hydrogels from cellulose extracted from water hyacinth. The incorporation of borax provided superabsorbent properties to the cellulose hydrogels, and the gel fraction and swelling ratio of the cross-linked hydrogels increased significantly. Moreover, the cross-linked cellulose-based hydrogels showed antibacterial activity and flame retardancy.

Comparing amorphous silica, short-range-ordered silicates and silicic acid species by FTIR

Ruth Ellerbrock et al.

Summary: There is increasing interest in the terrestrial silicon cycle due to its implications for ecosystem performance. The current analytical methods are limited, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis is suggested as a promising tool for differentiation. We conducted FTIR analyses on various silicon species and found that peak broadening and shifts in the Si-O-Si absorption band can indicate changes in internal order and incorporation of larger ions. Short-range ordered aluminosilicates (SROAS) can be distinguished from pure amorphous Si species using specific IR absorption bands.
