Uranium Removal from Aqueous Solutions by Aerogel-Based Adsorbents-A Critical Review

Efthalia Georgiou et al.

Summary: Aerogels are lightweight, nanoporous materials that have diverse applications and have been included in the top ten emerging technologies in chemistry for 2022. This review discusses the use of aerogel-based adsorbents for uranium removal and recovery and the factors affecting their adsorption efficiency and mechanism. The adsorbents show high sorption capacity for hexavalent uranium and follow Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Spectroscopic studies indicate the formation of inner-sphere complexes between surface active moieties and the uranyl cation. Aerogel-based adsorbents have potential in water treatment and uranium recovery, but further developments are needed to improve their selectivity for uranyl moieties.

Radioactivity/Radionuclide (U-232 and Am-241) Removal from Waters by Polyurea-Crosslinked Alginate Aerogels in the Sub-Picomolar Concentration Range

Ioannis Ioannidis et al.

Summary: The removal of radionuclide/radioactivity from laboratory and environmental water samples under ambient conditions was investigated using polyurea-crosslinked calcium alginate aerogels. The removal efficiency strongly depends on the pH of the solution, with higher efficiency in acidic solutions. This study is significant for the treatment of radioactive contaminated waters using aerogel materials.

Extremely Efficient Uranium Removal from Aqueous Environments with Polyurea-Cross-Linked Alginate Aerogel Beads

Efthalia Georgiou et al.

Summary: The removal of uranium(VI) from laboratory and environmental waters using polyurea-cross-linked calcium alginate (X-alginate) aerogels has been investigated. The experimental data revealed that the material has high adsorption capacity for uranium(VI) and the adsorption process is endothermic, entropy-driven, and follows the Langmuir isotherm model. The FTIR data and EDS analysis confirm the results of the batch experiments.

A comprehensive investigation on the sorption of U(VI) and Eu(III) by polyamide microplastics: Surface-assisted microparticle formation

Ioannis Ioannidis et al.

Summary: The sorption of Eu(III) and U(VI) on microplastics was studied, and it was found that metal ion sorption occurs via electrostatic interaction, resulting in surface charge neutralization. Further increase in metal ion concentration leads to surface precipitation in the form of microparticles. Uranium microparticles have a well defined crystalline structure, while amorphous particles are formed in the case of europium. The formation of microparticles on the microplastic surfaces is of great importance for the preparation of new microparticles and the environmental impact of such structures.

Uranium Isotope (U-232) Removal from Waters by Biochar Fibers: An Adsorption Study in the Sub-Picomolar Concentration Range

Maria Philippou et al.

Summary: The adsorption behavior of biochar fibers towards U-232 radionuclide in sub-picomolar concentrations was studied. The experimental results showed that pH, adsorbent mass, and surface oxidation had significant effects on adsorption efficiency. The influence of ionic strength and temperature indicated that adsorption was based on the formation of inner-sphere complexes and was an endothermic and entropy-driven process. The sorption kinetics revealed that the diffusion of U-232 from the solution to the biochar surface was the rate-determining step. Biochar-based adsorbents proved to be highly effective in treating radioactively contaminated water, even at sub-picomolar concentrations.

Summary: The study investigated the interaction between americium and polyamide and polyethylene microplastics in de-ionized and seawater samples. The sorption efficiency was found to depend on the type of microplastics, pH of the solution, and surface charge of the polyamide. Desorption of americium from microplastics is time-dependent, with complexing agents enhancing efficiency.
