Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles: Effective Antilarvicidal and Antibacterial Agents

S. Abinaya et al.

Summary: People in tropical and subtropical climate countries are at risk of mosquito-borne infections, leading to the urgent need for vector control. This study synthesized magnesium oxide nanoparticles using four different methods and characterized them using various techniques. The synthesized MgO nanoparticles showed excellent antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as mosquitocidal properties. The hydrothermally synthesized MgO nanostructures exhibited the highest efficacy in killing Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus larvae.

Exploring ZnO/Montmorillonite photocatalysts for the removal of hazardous RhB Dye: A combined study using molecular dynamics simulations and experiments

Redouane Haounati et al.

Summary: Photocatalytic degradation of pollutants by nanocomposites is a fascinating method used worldwide. A ZnO/Mont-morillonite (ZnO/Mt) nanocomposite synthesized through co-precipitation approach shows better photocatalytic performance compared to pure ZnO, due to the favorable interaction between montmorillonite and ZnO nanoparticles. Theoretical analysis and molecular dynamics simulation reveal that Rhodamine B (RhB) dye adsorption on ZnO/Mt is a result of negative interaction energy, and the energy required for RhB adsorption on ZnO/Mt is higher than that on Mt alone.

Z-Scheme g-C3N4/Fe3O4/Ag3PO4 @Sep magnetic nanocomposites as heterojunction photocatalysts for green malachite degradation and dynamic molecular studies

R. Haounati et al.

Summary: In this study, a Z-scheme heterostructures' nanocomposite was successfully prepared using a co-precipitation method. The nanocomposite was characterized and found to have Fe3O4, Ag3PO4, and g-C3N4 nanoparticles on the surface of sepiolite. The g-C3N4/Fe3O4/Ag3PO4 @Sep nanocomposite exhibited significantly better photocatalytic performance compared to pure g-C3N4, gC3N4 @Sep, and g-C3N4/Ag3PO4 @Sep. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity was attributed to the synergistic effects of the Z-scheme heterojunction construction, improving light usage and charge carrier migration rate. The study provides important insights into the design and synthesis of Z-scheme nano-composite heterojunctions for efficient photocatalytic applications.

Analysis on the combined effect of Gd3+ and Er3+ lanthanides in the microscopic, physicochemical and photocatalytic characteristics of MgO nanoparticles

R. Vijaya Shanthi et al.

Summary: This article describes the production of rare earth metal Gd3+ and Er3+ co-doped MgO nanoparticles using a simple precipitation technique and investigates the structure and characteristics of the synthesized particles using various analytical methods. The photocatalytic activity of the co-doped MgO nanoparticles was found to be higher compared to the pure one. Furthermore, the impact of point of zero charge (PZC) and pH on dye photo deterioration was extensively explored.

Effect of oxygen vacancy defects on electronic and optical properties of MgO monolayers: First principles study

Rituparna Hazarika et al.

Summary: The optoelectronic properties induced by oxygen vacancy defects in MgO (111) monolayers have been studied using hybrid level of DFT method. Results show a significant reduction in electronic band gap of MgO monolayer as a result of introduction of oxygen vacancies. The presence of oxygen vacancies leads to energy red shift of the observed optical phenomena and the di-vacancy system displays the strongest optical absorption and becomes optically responsive over the spectral range from visible to ultraviolet region.

Capacitor performance of MgO-templated carbons synthesized using hydrothermally treated MgO particles

Yuya Kado et al.

Summary: This study utilized hydrothermally treated MgO particles to prepare porous carbons, and evaluation of the electrode materials in electric double-layer capacitors showed that the balanced ratio of micropore volume to mesopore volume in the carbons is crucial for achieving high volumetric capacitance and good rate performance. The prepared porous carbons retained 93% of the initial capacitance after 10000 cycles, indicating their potential for long-term stability and application in energy storage devices.

Sol-gel synthesis of nanocrystalline MgO and its application as support in Ni/MgO catalysts for ethanol steam reforming

Luiz G. Possato et al.

Summary: This study reports the improved catalytic activity of nickel catalysts supported on nanocrystalline magnesium oxide prepared by a sol-gel method. The presence of Pluronic reduced the magnesium oxide crystallite size and formed small supported metallic nickel particles. Materials synthesized with the surfactant showed heightened activity in the ethanol steam reforming reaction and improved long-term stability of the catalysts by reducing coke formation.

Summary: The sol-gel process is a chemical method for synthesizing nanostructures, particularly metal oxide nanoparticles. It involves converting molecular precursors into a gel through hydrolysis/alcoholysis, followed by drying, powdering, and calcination. The method is cost-effective, allows control over chemical composition, and finds various applications in industries such as optics, electronics, energy, and biosensors.

Fabrication, characterization and high photocatalytic activity of Ag-ZnO heterojunctions under UV-visible light

Xiaodong Zhu et al.

Summary: The study showed that Ag modification had negligible impact on the crystal structure and surface properties of ZnO, but effectively suppressed the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Ag-ZnO photocatalysts exhibited significantly improved photocatalytic activity compared to commercial P25, mainly due to the generation of more O-2(-) radicals at Ag-ZnO heterojunctions.
