Klaudia Trembecka-Wojciga et al.

Summary: Graphene-based aerogels (GA) are highly potential in the field of biomedical engineering, as they possess high mechanical strength, biocompatibility, high porosity, and adsorption capacity. They can be used as scaffolds in various biomedical applications such as bone tissue engineering, wound healing, drug delivery, and nerve tissue engineering. This review provides a detailed overview of the current research status of graphene (Gn) and graphene oxide (GO) aerogels and their composites used in biomedical applications. It discusses the methods of obtaining highly porous materials, the impact of synthesis parameters on aerogel microstructure and porosity, and the improvement of biocompatibility in Gn and GO aerogels. It also explores the different types of GA and their architectural impact on mimicking the natural tissue environment, and proposes future challenges and prospects in using graphene-based aerogels for biomedical purposes, particularly in forming joints with biocompatible metals.

Facile control of porous structure of graphene aerogel via two-step drying process and its effect on drug release

Hana Lim et al.

Summary: A facile method has been proposed for synthesizing graphene aerogels with controllable pore structures. The resulting graphene aerogels had a three-dimensionally interconnected porous structure with both mesopores and macropores, which consisted of thin layered walls stacked with graphene sheets. Controlling hot air drying time could regulate various porous structural properties and drug release behavior. The cytotoxicity test confirmed the biocompatibility of the synthesized graphene aerogels for local drug release.

Preparation of porous diethylene triamine reduced graphene oxide aerogel for efficient pollutant dye adsorption

Leilei Jiang et al.

Summary: Diethylene triamine (DETA) reduced graphene oxide aerogel (DRA) was prepared by self-assembly and freeze-drying method. The effects of reduction temperature and DETA concentration on the performance of the aerogel were investigated. The results showed that DRA-8 obtained at a DETA concentration of 16 mu L/mL and a reduction temperature of 95 degrees C had a low density of 11.15 mg/cm³ and abundant macro-pores between 10 and 100 mu m in size. The adsorption capacities of DRA-8 for methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB) were found to be 227.24 and 266.82 mg/g, respectively, under different process conditions. The thermodynamics analysis indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous.

Deashed Wheat-Straw Biochar as a Potential Superabsorbent for Pesticides

Irmina Cwielag-Piasecka et al.

Summary: Biochar activation methods have received widespread attention for improving the sorptive properties of carbon-based materials, and chemically modified biochars have shown potential in purifying soil and water from xenobiotics. This study investigates the changes in physicochemical properties of high-temperature wheat-straw biochar upon deashing and its retention of pesticides. Deashing increased the aromaticity and abundance of surface hydroxyl groups in the biochar, resulting in enhanced meso- and microporosity and surface area. Hydrophobic pesticides showed high and irreversible adsorption on both biochars, while hydrophilic and ionic phenoxyacetic acids were weakly and reversibly sorbed. The modified biochar has the potential to serve as a superabsorbent for immobilizing organic pollutants of diverse hydrophobicity in water and soil solutions.
