Quantifying the particle shape and surface roughness of sands

Ting Yao et al.

Summary: The shape and surface roughness of natural sands play significant roles in their macro- and micro-mechanical behavior. Existing methods for characterizing sand shape typically rely on visual comparison or static image analysis, without considering surface roughness. This study measured the global shape of four types of natural sand using a dynamic particle shape analyzer and quantified it using aspect ratio, sphericity, and convexity. The influence of mineralogy, depositional environment, and particle size on shape was discussed. Additionally, the surface roughness of the sands was measured using an optical interferometer, and the roughness characteristics were analyzed. The results showed that the shape descriptors of Leighton Buzzard sand were the highest, indicating a more spherical and rounded shape, while the surface roughness of carbonate sand was the roughest and most variable.

Performance of eco-friendly polymers for soil stabilization and their resistance to freeze-thaw action

Irem Bozyigit et al.

Summary: Soil improvement methods using environmentally friendly additives have gained popularity in geotechnical applications. The mechanical properties of eco-friendly polymers, such as xanthan gum, guar gum, and anionic polyacrylamide polymer, were investigated under freeze-thaw action on kaolin clay specimens. Both synthetic and biological polymers induced strength gain, with guar gum showing the most significant improvement. The strength increase in polyacrylamide polymer was higher than in previous studies. Curing time did not significantly affect strength gain in anionic polyacrylamide-contained specimens. Freeze-thaw action caused a reduction in strength, but anionic polymer was the most resistant to this effect. Eco-friendly polymers are suitable for regions with freeze-thaw action.

Geometric form changes of soil quartz minerals under Freeze-thaw weathering

Qi Liu et al.

Summary: Freeze-thaw weathering can alter soil mineral geometry and cause severe damage to the Earth's surface, with implications for the global geological environment. Researchers conducted numerous freeze-thaw weathering experiments to investigate the morphological development and trends of quartz minerals under freeze-thaw cycle (FTC) action. Their results showed that grain-size morphology became more heterogeneous geometrically as the number of FTCs increased, freeze-thaw weathering caused breakage of soil minerals, and the surface geometrical characteristics of quartz minerals resembled those of quartz crystals. This novel discovery of self-similarity between macro- and micro-morphology during weathering denudation has significant implications for understanding underlying geomorphological changes.

Mortar's rheological property and workability investigation based on morphology impact factor for graded sand particles

Xiaobing He et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to characterize the comprehensive effects of morphology and quantity of graded sand particles on mortar performance using a morphology impact factor. The results show that the morphology impact factor is correlated with the yield shear stress and slump flow of the mortar, and can predict the slump flow based on the yield shear stress of the fresh mortar.

Multi-scale particle morphology evolution in rotating drum tests: Role of particle shape and pore fluid

Ting Yao et al.

Summary: During the long-distance movement of debris avalanches, particles interact with each other through rolling, sliding, and colliding, potentially causing breakage and shape change. Research shows that grains are more likely to experience corner abrasion in water-saturated conditions, while morphology evolution is suppressed in slurry-saturated medium. The viscosity of the pore fluid plays a critical role in controlling the particle morphology evolution.

Particle breakage behavior in frozen sands during triaxial shear tests based on the energy principle

Pei Zuan et al.

Summary: It is well known that particle breakage in frozen sands occurs throughout the triaxial shearing process and is accompanied by irreversible energy dissipation. In this study, the contact relationships between particles in frozen sands were investigated, and a modified energy equation was developed to consider the continuous variation in the internal friction angle. Cryogenic triaxial compression tests were conducted to explore the particle breakage behaviors, and it was found that the degree of particle breakage is most severe when the axial strain ranges from 1.5% to 2.5%. The results also showed that the energy dissipation increases with higher confining pressure, shear stress, or lower temperature.

Particle breakage mechanism and particle shape evolution of calcareous sand under impact loading

Xing Wang et al.

Summary: Exploring the meso-fabric characteristics of calcareous sand is crucial for predicting its macro-mechanical responses under impact loading. This study conducted multiple impact tests on calcareous sand and found that the particles of size 2-5 mm showed the largest breakage extent. Particle breakage was mainly caused by breakoff and abrasion. The particle size obtained from particle shape scanning tests was smaller than that from sieving tests due to different measuring principles and irregular particle shape. The relative change ratio of the particle shape parameter was proposed to quantify variations in particle shapes with increasing number of impact tests, revealing that particle shapes became increasingly regular with particle breakage.

Crushing effects on the durability of rocky aggregates used on road surfaces subjected to winter maintenance and extreme climate conditions

A. P. Perez-Fortes et al.

Summary: The internal structure of rocks, determined by their empty spaces, has a significant impact on the quality and durability of aggregates used in construction. However, the study of the intrinsic properties of the raw material and the processes affecting its quality and durability during aggregate production is lacking. This research analyzes the evolution of the internal structure of aggregates used in Spanish roads, and investigates the impact of temperature variations and winter maintenance operations on the durability of rocks and aggregates. Results show that the crushing processes in quarries increase water absorption coefficient and generate micro-porosity, negatively impacting the durability of aggregates under extreme climate conditions.

Investigating Mechanical Behaviors of Rocks Under Freeze-Thaw Cycles Using Discrete Element Method

Chenchen Huang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the influence of Freeze-Thaw Cycles (FTCs) on the mechanical properties of rock using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). A new algorithm is developed to better represent the saturated rock samples in the DEM model. The results show that FTCs deteriorate the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Young's modulus of rock specimens. The study also explores the effects of porosity and initial UCS on the decay constant, which reflects the freeze-thaw resistance of rock.

Summary: Recycling glass waste for sustainable cementitious mortar and concrete is gaining attention in the construction industry. This research aimed to study the effect of Ammonium Nitrate (NH4NO3) on the weight and strength of glass mortar. Experimental results showed that NH4NO3 had a less critical impact on the density of mortar containing recycled glass powder, and a 10% replacement level of cement with glass powder resulted in the maximum compressive strength after 60 days of immersion in NH4NO3 solution.
