Investigating microscale structural characteristics and resultant macroscale mechanical properties of loess exposed to alkaline and saline environments

Lin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructural evolution of loess in alkaline and saline environments through a series of microscale tests, finding that the enhanced microstructural characteristics contributed to improved macroscale mechanical properties. The results provide design guideposts for preventing and mitigating subgrade degradation in saline environments.

Experimental and numerical modeling on liquefaction resistance of geotextile reinforced sand

Lei Su et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of geotextiles on the liquefaction resistance of sand through experiments and numerical simulations. The results show that increasing the layer number of geotextiles can enhance the liquefaction resistance of sand, while increasing the cyclic strain amplitude reduces the resistance and leads to the accumulation of pore water pressure.

Failure modes and ultimate bearing capacity of the isolated stone column in soft soil

Xin Tan et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the bearing mechanism of isolated stone columns in soft soil, revealing that the ultimate bearing capacity is controlled by both the soil shear strength and stiffness. A novel analytical solution accounting for these factors has been proposed, offering a more precise prediction of the ultimate bearing capacity in soft soil.

Numerical prediction of undrained cyclic triaxial experiments on saturated Kasai river sand using two constitutive models of liquefaction

Raj Banerjee et al.

Summary: The paper presents a numerical simulation of stress-controlled undrained cyclic tri-axial tests conducted on local sand at various relative densities and CSR values. Two constitutive models for liquefaction, Finn-Byrne model and PM4 sand model, are compared. The PM4 sand model shows more efficiency in predicting flow liquefaction and cyclic mobility compared to Finn model.

Liquefaction mitigation mechanisms of stone column-improved ground by dynamic centrifuge model tests

Yan-Guo Zhou et al.

Summary: Stone columns are a common technique for mitigating liquefaction disasters, helping to densify the soil, expedite drainage, and potentially reinforcing shear strength. The densification effect of stone columns can reduce liquefaction potential and post-shaking settlement, but significantly amplifies ground motion propagation. Meanwhile, the drainage effect of stone columns in a densified ground can accelerate ground stiffness recovery and reduce ground deformation.

Revealing the Enhancement and Degradation Mechanisms Affecting the Performance of Carbonate Precipitation in EICP Process

Wenle Hu et al.

Summary: This study compares the ordinary EICP process with the modified EICP process, finding that the modified EICP process subjected to higher MgCl2 concentrations performs the best, with the mechanism of carbonate precipitation enhancement interpreted through elevating urease enzyme activity by introducing magnesium ions. Different degradation phenomena of carbonate precipitation occur when subjected to higher NH4Cl and CaCl2 concentrations, highlighting the potential use of EICP technology for the protection of heritage buildings in NW China.

3D DEM-FDM Coupled Analysis of the Behavior of an Isolated Geogrid-Encased Stone Column under Axial Loading

Xin Tan et al.

Summary: In this study, a 3D numerical model was used to simulate the axial loading test on a geogrid-encased stone column, successfully verifying the rationality of the model through experimental results. The bearing capacity of the geogrid-encased stone column mainly depends on the transverse ribs of the geogrid. The numerical results show the evolution of force chain network and coordination number inside the stone column during loading process, related to macroscopic failure behaviors.

Improvement of the Shearing Behaviour of Loess Using Recycled Straw Fiber Reinforcement

Zhong-Fei Xue et al.

Summary: The study found that recycled straw fibers enhance the shear behavior of loess and identified the mechanism behind it through controlled tests. The potential of using recycled straw fiber-reinforced loess to protect the fragile loess environment in northwest China is highlighted in the test results.

Assessing the influence of liquefied soil resistance on the critical axial load of rock-socketed piles: shake-table test and numerical analyses

Xiaoyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the critical axial load of rock-socketed piles in liquefiable soils using shake-table tests and numerical analysis methods. A buckling analysis approach based on the nonlinear p-y analysis method was proposed, showing that considering the liquefied soil resistance results in a larger critical axial load than not considering it. An empirical formula was also proposed to evaluate the impact of the liquefied soil resistance.
