A multi-objective optimization based on genetic algorithms for the sustainable design of Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA)

Rodrigo Polo-Mendoza et al.

Summary: This research developed a methodology to optimize the design of Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) using three recycled materials as partial replacement of natural aggregates. The methodology includes the evaluation of environmental impacts and financial investment, as well as the use of a computational model for multi-objective optimization. The study concludes that WMA with recycled materials can have sustainability benefits compared to conventional WMA, even under long hauling distances and high prices.

Life cycle assessment of hot mix asphalt with recycled concrete aggregates for road pavements construction

Daniela L. Vega A. et al.

Summary: In this study, a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of using recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) as a partial replacement for natural aggregates in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) production. The results showed that mixtures with 15% and 30% RCA replacements can be considered environmentally friendly alternatives, while the mixture with 45% RCA replacement has lower environmental performance.

Asphalt fatigue endurance limit estimation and impact on perpetual pavement design

Kenneth A. Tutu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of two methods, NCHRP 9-38 and NCHRP 9-44A, in estimating the fatigue endurance limit (FEL) of asphalt. The impact of these methods on asphalt thickness was also investigated. The results showed that the NCHRP 9-38 method yielded greater FEL values. Additionally, the NCHRP 9-44A model produced similar results for different types of mixtures when a rest period exceeding 5 seconds was entered.

A systematic review of the utilization of waste materials as aggregate replacement in stone matrix asphalt mixes

Ali Mohammed Babalghaith et al.

Summary: The daily utilization of a large amount of raw materials is depleting natural resources rapidly, leading researchers to seek ways to reduce the environmental impact of waste materials. One method being explored is the use of waste materials as substitute for natural materials in construction, such as in road pavements. This paper reviews previous studies on the use of waste materials as aggregate replacement in stone matrix asphalt mix and its impact on the performance of asphalt pavements. Future research should focus on investigating other waste materials that can improve mix design and enhance pavement performance.

The parametric comparison of perpetual pavements with respect to Life-cycle cost and greenhouse gas emissions

Saurabh Kulkarni et al.

Summary: The present study compares perpetual pavements designed according to IRC 37 (2018) guidelines, and finds that changing the thickness of sub base and base layers significantly affects the overall pavement thickness, life cycle cost, and CO2 emissions. The study concludes that deep strength perpetual pavements are the most cost-effective and eco-friendly option.

Properties of concrete with untreated and treated crumb rubber - A review

Rida Alwi Assaggaf et al.

Summary: Crumb rubber has been used to enhance the impact and toughness of concrete, and the flexibility of rubber aggregates could be the key to solving failure due to fatigue. Although there may be a marginal reduction in mechanical properties, appropriate treatment of crumb rubber can overcome this issue. The use of crumb rubber concrete can have a positive impact on the environment by solving disposal problems and conserving natural aggregates.

Summary: Flexible pavements are experiencing structural distresses due to increase in traffic volume, heavy vehicles, and changes in climate, leading to decreased performance. Adopting the concept of Perpetual pavements can be a solution to enhance design life and minimize traffic disruptions. By utilizing high modulus layer with Gilsonite modified bitumen, maintenance costs can be reduced and pavement longevity can be improved.
