High-strength engineered cementitious composites with nanosilica incorporated: Mechanical performance and autogenous self-healing behavior

Zhigang Zhang et al.

Summary: The addition of nanosilica can improve the self-healing performance of high-strength engineered cementitious composite (ECC) by densifying the matrix and strengthening the bond between fibers and the matrix. The nano-modified mixtures exhibit enhanced mechanical properties, reduced crack widths, and facilitate the autogenous self-healing process of ECC.

Axial compressive behaviour of thin-walled composite columns comprise high-strength cold-formed steel and PE-ECC

Ahmed Sheta et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new type of thin-walled composite columns made of high-strength cold-formed steel (CFS) open sections and thin layers of engineered cementitious composites (ECC). The axial behavior of the composite CFS/ECC columns under concentric loads was experimentally investigated. The results showed that the composite columns had significantly enhanced axial compressive capacity, ductility indices, and compressive toughness compared to the bare CFS columns. Strength prediction equations were also developed based on experimental observations.

Performance of lightweight SCC beams strengthened with rubberized engineered cementitious composite in shear

Mohamed K. Ismail et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the shear behavior of lightweight self-consolidating concrete (LWSCC) beams strengthened with rubberized engineered cementitious composite (RECC). The experimental results indicated that strengthening the LWSCC beams with a RECC layer can improve their shear strength, deformability, and energy absorption capacity. Placing the RECC layer at the compression zone improves the shear behavior, while placing it at the tension zone enhances cracking resistance.

Use of rubberized engineered cementitious composite in strengthening flexural concrete beams

Basem H. AbdelAleem et al.

Summary: This study investigated the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with high-performance rubberized engineered cementitious composite (RECC) at different cross-sectional positions. The results showed that using a RECC layer in the compression side exhibited significantly higher deformability, cracking behavior, ductility, and energy absorption compared to the reference beams. Meanwhile, placing a RECC layer in the tension side showed lower ductility and energy absorption capacity compared to the compression side, but still higher than the reference beams. The study also found that a RECC layer developed with powder rubber performed better in enhancing energy absorption and ductility compared to a RECC layer developed with crumb rubber.

Flexural strength of innovative thin-walled composite cold-formed steel/PE-ECC beams

Ahmed Sheta et al.

Summary: This paper presents a detailed experimental investigation on the flexural behaviour of an innovative precast composite element combining cold-formed steel and engineered cementitious composites. The results show that the composite CFS/ECC beams exhibit high load-bearing capacities and significantly increase the moment capacities compared to the bare CFS sections.

Flexural strengthening of RC beams with BFRP or high strength steel bar-reinforced ECC matrix

Zhi-qiang Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with BFRP or HSS bars, finding that BFRP bars dominated in the failure of beams while HSS bars significantly improved flexural capacity due to their high stiffness and strength. Comparisons between ECC and polymer mortar matrices showed that ECC resulted in larger enhancements in load capacities, confirming the excellent strain compatibility of BFRP bars and ECC matrix. Additionally, a flexural theoretical analysis was proposed and verified through experimental results.

Sustainable high strength, high ductility engineered cementitious composites (ECC) with substitution of cement by rice husk ash

Zhigang Zhang et al.

Summary: A sustainable high strength ECC was designed by partially replacing cement with rice husk ash, resulting in increased compressive strength and tensile strain capacity. The incorporation of RHA into ECCs reduced matrix toughness but slightly decreased matrix/fiber interfacial bond, leading to an increased PSH index and enhanced strain capacity at a composite level.

Structural performance of novel thin-walled composite cold-formed steel/PE-ECC beams

Ahmed Sheta et al.

Summary: A novel form of thin-walled composite beams has been developed by bonding cold-formed steel (CFS) and engineered cementitious composites (ECC). Experimental study shows that the new composite system has better load capacity and ductility compared to traditional CFS structures, with more ductile failure modes.

Structural performance of large-scale concrete beams reinforced with cementitious composite containing different fibers

Mohamed K. Ismail et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structural behavior of large-scale normal concrete beams repaired with different fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC). The results showed that repairing NC beams with ECC or SFRCC significantly improved their flexural performance, with SFRCC showing more pronounced improvements. Additionally, repairing NC beams with ECC or SFRCC in the tension zone helped control crack initiation and propagation, leading to better durability performance.
