Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Pig Manure and Rice Straw: Optimization of Process Parameters for Enhancing Biogas Production and System Stability

Pengjiao Tian et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to optimize the process parameters of anaerobic co-digestion of pig manure and rice straw for maximizing methane production and system stability. Batch experiments were conducted with different mixing ratios, total solid concentrations, and inoculum accounts. Results showed that a 1:5 mixing ratio of pig manure to rice straw, 12% total solid content, and 15% inoculum account yielded the highest biogas production. Co-digestion increased the cooperative index and effectively buffered pH and VFAs, showing good system stability. The Gompertz model fitting revealed significantly superior methane production under optimal conditions.

Process Performance and Functional Microbial Community in the Anaerobic Digestion of Chicken Manure: A Review

Yapeng Song et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion of chicken manure is hindered by the high nitrogen content, inhibiting methane production. This review provides new insights into maintaining methanogens' activities, the decomposition of acetate, and the dynamics of methanogenic pathways under high ammonia stress. Possible strategies for alleviating ammonia inhibition effects are also analyzed, including supplementation of trace elements, co-digestion with nitrogen-less materials, in-situ ammonia removal, and long-term adaptation of anaerobic consortia to ammonia stress. The findings of this study may contribute to a better understanding of anaerobic digestion technology for chicken manure and other nitrogen-rich waste and wastewater.

Layer Inoculation as a New Technology to Resist Volatile Fatty Acid Inhibition during Solid-State Anaerobic Digestion: Methane Yield Performance and Microbial Responses

Xingliang Gao et al.

Summary: The present study compared a new inoculation method called layer inoculation to premixing inoculation in solid-state anaerobic digestion. Layer inoculation significantly increased CH4 yields and reduced volatile fatty acid concentrations compared with premixing inoculation. It also showed wider methane yield peaks and shorter startup times. Overall, layer inoculation effectively enhanced methane production under high volatile fatty acid concentrations.

Transiting from the inhibited steady-state to the steady-state through the ammonium bicarbonate mediation in the anaerobic digestion of low-C/N-ratio food wastes

Tianwei Hao et al.

Summary: The effects of NH4+ on anaerobic digestion metabolism are complex, with increased ammonium concentration not limiting methane production but causing volatile fatty acid accumulation and an inhibited steady-state system. Adding NH4HCO3 can enhance methane yield by aiding microbial oxidation of VFAs, leading to improved efficiency in acetoclastic methanogenesis processes.

Synergistic Effects of Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Pretreated Corn Stover with Chicken Manure and Its Kinetics

Qiong Yu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the pretreatment effects and synergistic effects of anaerobic co-digestion of corn stover and chicken manure. The NaOH-H(2)O(2) pretreatment was more effective in promoting anaerobic digestion compared to urea pretreatment, with the best results achieved at a mixing ratio of 1:3. Synergistic effects were observed at specific mixing ratios for both types of pretreated corn stover.

Anaerobic co-digestion of corn stover and chicken manure using continuous stirred tank reactor: The effect of biochar addition and urea pretreatment

Qiong Yu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the performance of biochar mediated anaerobic co-digestion of corn stover and chicken manure, showing that urea pretreatment and biochar addition can improve co-AD, with a synergistic effect under medium and high OLR conditions. The results reveal that urea pretreatment and biochar addition promoted the AD process by strengthening the buffer capacity system and improving the degradation of lignocellulosic biomass.

Sustainable management and recycling of food waste anaerobic digestate: A review

Shanta Dutta et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is widely used to produce biogas from food waste, but a significant amount of nutrient-rich food waste anaerobic digestate (FWD) remains under-utilised. FWD has potential as a nutrient source for microalgal cultivation and biofuel production, and emerging technologies like thermal conversion show promise in converting FWD into value-added products like biochar/hydrochar. Integrated AD with valorisation facilities is encouraged to achieve complete resource utilisation and reduce carbon emissions.

The effects of C/N (10-25) on the relationship of substrates, metabolites, and microorganisms in inhibited steady-state of anaerobic digestion

Zehui Zheng et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between substrates, metabolites, and microorganisms in the inhibited steady-state by creating a C/N gradient in anaerobic digestion. The results showed that competition among bacteria was high under low C/N conditions, while cooperation among bacteria was high under high C/N conditions. Additionally, the study further elucidated the process of ammonia inhibition and microbiological indicators of the inhibited steady-state.

Study of two-phase anaerobic digestion of corn stover: Focusing on the conversion of volatile fatty acids and microbial characteristics in UASB reactor

Yan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the methanogenic performance and microbial communities in UASB reactors treating acidogenic metabolites from ensiled corn stover, focusing on the conversion of volatile fatty acids and the effects of different organic loading rates. The removal rate of chemical oxygen demand reached above 80.0% at an OLR of 8 g/L.d, with a significant improvement in volumetric methane production rate. However, when the OLR reached 10 g COD/L.d, the accumulation of acetic and propionic acids led to methane production failure. The study also compared microbial communities in anaerobic sludge at OLR of 8 g COD/L.d and analyzed the shift of bacteria and archaea.
