A comprehensive review of characterization, pretreatment and its applications on different lignocellulosic biomass for bioethanol production

Nisha Das et al.

Summary: With the depletion of petroleum derivatives and increasing environmental pollution issues, there has been a growing interest in the study of lignocellulosic biomass as an alternative source of energy. This review focuses on the characterization of different biomass feedstocks and the development of pretreatment technologies for bioethanol production. Various physical, chemical, physicochemical, and biological methods are discussed, which help in overcoming the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass and facilitate the hydrolysis and fermentation process for bioethanol production.

Bioethanol Production from Lignocellulosic Biomass-Challenges and Solutions

Magdalena Broda et al.

Summary: Given the limited resources for fossil fuels and the growing global energy demands, it is crucial to find sustainable, environmentally friendly, renewable, and economically viable alternative energy sources. One promising option is the production of second-generation bioethanol from non-food lignocellulosic biomass. However, the commercial production of cellulosic ethanol faces challenges such as high research and production costs. This review summarizes the current state of bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass, discusses the most challenging aspects of the process, presents recent technological advances to overcome these challenges and high costs, and explores future perspectives for second-generation biorefineries.

Characterization of bioethanol obtained from Eichhornia Crassipes plant; its emission and performance analysis on CI engine

Osama Khan et al.

Summary: In this study, bioethanol was produced from Eichhornia crassipes plant and tested in a diesel engine to understand its potential as a fuel. Blending bioethanol from Eichhornia crassipes with diesel resulted in improved engine parameters, with a 10% blend standing out for enhanced brake power and efficiency. Emission levels like CO and unburned HC were lower in the 10% blend compared to other blends, except for NOx emissions, which depended on the engine construction.
