Use of Hydrothermal Pretreatment to Enhance Biogas Production from Pelagic Sargassum

I. D. Ayala-Mercado et al.

Summary: Excessive amounts of pelagic Sargassum have negative impacts on Mexican coastlines, and there is currently a lack of proper management strategies. This study compares the effectiveness of steam explosion and extrusion as pretreatment methods to improve the digestibility of Sargassum and found that both methods significantly increase the bioconversion rate of the macroalgae.

From Seaweeds to Cosmeceutics: A Multidisciplinar Approach

Giorgio Grillo et al.

Summary: The use of microwave and ultrasound-assisted extraction from algae, especially brown, green, and red algae, shows potential in developing cosmetics with high phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Green algae, particularly Ulva lactuca, stand out as a suitable source of antioxidants for cosmetic formulations. The gel and emulsion formulations made from these extracts are stable and show efficient controlled release of active ingredients.
