Ni-B-P micro spheres for superior water splitting OER electrocatalyst satisfying industrial operational requirement

Md Ahasan Habib et al.

Summary: To meet global energy demand and address the climate crisis, the development of an advanced electrocatalyst for hydrogen generation through water electrolysis is necessary. In this study, nickel-boride-phosphide (Ni-B-P) microspheres were synthesized by a hydrothermal approach, showing significantly improved catalytic activities for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to optimization of various synthesis parameters. The Ni-B-P micro sphere electrode exhibited enhanced OER performance compared to the RuO2 benchmark electrode, attributed to its improved charge transfer capacity, large electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), and excellent stability and corrosion resistance. The Ni-B-P micro spheres demonstrated an OER overpotential of 360 mV at 300 mA/cm2, while the RuO2 benchmark required 460 mV. The bifunctional Ni-B-P sphere electrode achieved high current densities of 2,000 mA/cm2 in 1 M and 6 M KOH electrolytes, showing excellent durability for over 5 days (120 hours) at elevated temperatures, meeting the requirements for industrial operation. Furthermore, when coupled with Pt/C (Pt/C || Ni-B-P), the hybrid configuration exhibited super-low cell voltages of 2.89 and 2.72 V at 2,000 mA/cm2 in 1 M and 6 M KOH, demonstrating its feasibility for commercial OER applications.

Constructing superhydrophilic CoRu-LDH/PANI nanowires with optimized electronic structure for hydrogen evolution reaction

Jiexin Chen et al.

Summary: Promoting the dissociation of water and desorption of hydrogen is crucial for improving the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and stability in alkaline media. In this study, a polyaniline-coated CoRu-LDH (CoRu-LDH/PANI) nanowire array electrocatalyst is demonstrated to be efficient and stable for alkaline HER. The CoRu-LDH/PANI exhibits excellent HER activity with low overpotentials at large current densities, surpassing the benchmark Pt/C and the pristine CoRu-LDH. The PANI coating not only enhances the HER performance by regulating the electronic structure and reducing the binding strength to hydrogen intermediates, but also provides a superhydrophilic surface for electrolyte and bubble transport, contributing to the long-term stability.
