Geochemical characteristics of natural gases and source rocks in Obayied sub-basin, north Western Desert, Egypt: implications for gas-source correlation

Mostafa Hassan et al.

Summary: The Western Desert in Egypt is a significant oil and gas province, accounting for more than 50% of the country's oil production. This study investigates the genetic link between oil and gas phases in the Obayied sub-basin, where both phases coexist. The results show that Middle Jurassic Khatatba organofacies is capable of generating wet and dry hydrocarbon gases. Secondary cracking of liquid hydrocarbon phases is found to be more significant in gas generation and accumulation. This study highlights the importance of secondary cracking in the formation of huge gas accumulations in basins with oil-prone source intervals.

Integrated petrographical and petrophysical evaluation for reservoir management of the Upper Miocene Qawasim sandstones in West Dikirnis, onshore Nile Delta, Egypt

Mahmoud Leila et al.

Summary: In this study, we conducted a detailed evaluation of the Upper Miocene Qawasim Formation, an important hydrocarbon reservoir in the West Dikirnis field, onshore Nile Delta. By integrating various analysis techniques, such as petrographical thin sections, SEM, XRD, wireline logs, and routine core analysis, we identified eight lithofacies and four facies associations in the reservoir. The dominant lithology consists of massive subfeldspathic arenites with high intergranular porosity and good pore connectivity. We also observed diagenetic processes, such as feldspar leaching and cementation, which affect the reservoir quality. Based on our findings, we made inferences on drilling, completion, and reservoir management strategies.

Controls of facies distribution on reservoir quality in the Messinian incised-valley fill Abu Madi Formation in Salma delta gas field, northeastern onshore Nile Delta, Egypt

Mahmoud Leila et al.

Summary: The Messinian incised-valley fill sediments of the Abu Madi Formation are the most prospective hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs in the Nile Delta, where an integrated seismic-stratigraphic, sedimentological and petrophysical approach is applied to identify factors controlling reservoir heterogeneity. The study interprets two separate channelized systems reflecting flow dynamics and depositional energy variations, highlighting the impact of sedimentological and compositional controls on pore-scale heterogeneity and reservoir quality. Different reservoir rock types with varying lithological and compositional characteristics were identified, each displaying different petrophysical flow properties.

Hydrocarbon prospectivity of the miocene-pliocene clastic reservoirs, Northern Taranaki basin, New Zealand: integration of petrographic and geophysical studies

Ahmed A. Radwan et al.

Summary: The study aimed to characterize the Early Pliocene sandstone (EP-SD) and Late Miocene-Early Pliocene Mangaa sandstone reservoirs in northern Taranaki basin, New Zealand using petrographical and petrophysical data. The sandstone units are poorly consolidated very fine sandstone to siltstone with average porosities of 25%, mainly composed of quartz, feldspars, and mica. The efficiency of the sealing cap rocks of these reservoirs is relatively low compared to central parts of the Taranaki Basin.

Geophysical 3D-static reservoir and basin modeling of a Jurassic estuarine system (JG-Oilfield, Abu Gharadig basin, Egypt)

Mohammad A. Abdelwahhab et al.

Summary: This study developed a depositional model for predicting reservoir heterogeneity and quality of the Jurassic estuarine depositional system using an integrated approach of facies analysis and modeling. Stochastic 3D geocellular reservoir modeling, constrained by seismic attribute analysis, was used to predict the lateral distribution of different facies. Predicting organic maturities and understanding sedimentary basin evolution were also important in confirming hydrocarbon charging to reservoir intervals.

Organic geochemistry and oil-source rock correlation of the Cretaceous succession in West Wadi El-Rayan (WWER) concession: Implications for a new Cretaceous petroleum system in the north Western Desert, Egypt

Mahmoud Leila et al.

Summary: The Mesozoic rift basins in the north Western Desert of Egypt contain the majority of the country's proven oil reserves. Poorly-explored structural highs such as the Kattaniya high and Qattara ridge have unknown petroleum systems. Recent discoveries in the West Wadi El-Rayan concession highlight the need for understanding the petroleum potential in these transitional regions. The study integrates geochemical data and basin modeling to identify potential source rocks and understand the mechanism of oil generation and migration. The findings suggest a new petroleum system in the area with the potential for early oil generation from fluvio-deltaic shales in the AEB formation.

Hydrocarbon accumulation in basins with multiple phases of extension and inversion: examples from the Western Desert (Egypt) and the western Black Sea

William Bosworth et al.

Summary: In many basins, folds associated with inverted extensional faults are important exploration targets. Factors such as crestal breaching and erosion of top seal can lead to failure to trap hydrocarbons in inversion structures. However, in rift basins with multi-phase histories, new top seals can be deposited following inversion events, potentially enhancing hydrocarbon maturation and success rates. Understanding the complex sequence of extensional and contractional events in a basin is essential for formulating successful exploration strategies.
