Mixed-ceria reinforced acid functionalized graphene oxide-Nafion electrolyte membrane with enhanced proton conductivity and chemical durability for PEMFCs

Bapun Barik et al.

Summary: This study reports a method to enhance the chemical durability and proton conductivity of Nafion membrane by using mixed-ceria nanoparticles and phosphorylated graphene oxide. The introduction of phosphorylated graphene oxide and mixed-ceria nanoparticles results in higher proton conductivity and chemical durability compared to pure Nafion.

Effects of microstructure on the retention of proton conductivity of Nafion/SiO2 composite membranes at elevated temperatures:An in situ SAXS study

Jianchun Niu et al.

Summary: In this article, a series of Nafion/SiO2 composite membranes with different contents of doped silica nanoparticles are prepared, and the water dynamic change process and functional properties are studied. The structural parameters, such as crystallinity and average chain spacing, are found to correlate well with the membrane properties. The microstructure, phase separation changes, and ion cluster fraction of the membranes are investigated using synchrotron-based in situ small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Surprisingly, the amount of water in the membranes may not be the decisive factor for proton conductivity at relatively high temperatures; instead, the complexity or connectivity of the proton transport channel plays a more important role.

Summary: This study presents the potential of sulfonated poly (ether-ether-ketone)/ poly (vinylidene fluorideco-hexafluoro propylene)/SiO2 (SPEEK/PVdF-HFP/SiO2) composite proton exchange membrane for the use of microbial fuel cell. The characteristics of the composite membrane were examined using various techniques, and the performance of the membrane in microbial fuel cells was analyzed. The incorporation of SiO2 in the polymer composite membrane showed the highest proton conductivity and voltage generation.

Effect of thermal crosslinking process on membrane structure and PEM fuel cell applications performed with SPEEK-PVA blend membranes

Yavuz Yagizatli et al.

Summary: Fuel cell technology, especially the PEM fuel cell, shows great promise as a clean and sustainable energy option. The study focuses on the development of a blend membrane using SPEEK and PVA with different sulfo-nation degrees, aiming to improve the stability and prevent dissolution in water. Thermal crosslinking was found to effectively prevent the dissolution of membranes and enhance their stability. Comparative analysis of various membrane characteristics demonstrated the improved structural stability of the thermally crosslinked membranes.

Dawei Ji et al.

Summary: This study developed a solvent-free and green method to prepare PVDF hollow fiber membranes using melt-spinning and stretching technique, based on the interface pore theory. The controlled pore structure of the membranes was achieved by introducing bisphenol A polysulfone molecular chains into the PVDF melt. The membranes showed high rejection and decreased turbidity when filtering SiO2 and active sludge suspensions, with outstanding mechanical properties and no hazardous solvents used in the preparation process.
