Peak Shaving of a District Heated Office Building with Short-Term Thermal Energy Storage in Finland

Yuchen Ju et al.

Summary: Short-term thermal energy storage techniques can effectively reduce peak power and accommodate more intermittent renewable energies in district heating systems. This paper investigated the potential of peak shaving through the integration of a thermal storage tank into a substation of a Finnish office building.

A review on buildings energy information: Trends, end-uses, fuels and drivers

M. Gonzalez-Torres et al.

Summary: Buildings contribute significantly to climate change, but there is a lack of reliable and consistent data for the development and evaluation of mitigation policies. Residential buildings have the highest energy consumption, with HVAC systems being the main source. Electrification has the potential to mitigate climate change if renewable power is promoted, but global cooperation is needed to break the link between economic growth, urbanization, and energy consumption in developing nations.

The Impact of Energy Renovation on Continuously and Intermittently Heated Residential Buildings in Southern Europe

Yangmin Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the impacts of several novel renovation technologies on energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and indoor climates in southern European residential buildings through building-level simulations. The results show that these technologies have significant effects on energy consumption and CO2 emissions, but are influenced by the heating schedule.

Energy Resources and Markets - Perspectives on the Russia-Ukraine War

Jokull Johannesson et al.

Summary: This article explains the causes of the Russia-Ukraine war starting in 2014 from the energy and energy markets perspective. It argues that Ukraine's energy deposits and pipeline system pose a direct competitive threat to Russia's energy exports, leading to Russia's annexation of Crimea and the subsequent war in eastern Ukraine.

Studies on the performance of ground source heat pump affected by soil freezing under groundwater seepage

Xinwei Meng et al.

Summary: Groundwater seepage and soil freezing impact the heat transfer ability in soil and the operation performance of ground source heat pump systems during heating period in cold regions. A dynamic simulation platform for ground heat exchangers performance under typical geological conditions is established in this study, and the influence of soil freezing and seepage velocity on system performance is quantified. It is found that with increasing seepage velocity, the influence of soil freezing on system performance gradually weakens.

A Novel Data Management Methodology and Case Study for Monitoring and Performance Analysis of Large-Scale Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) and Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES) System

Oleg Todorov et al.

Summary: Aalto New Campus Complex is a newly inaugurated educational facility at Aalto University in Finland, encompassing two faculties, a shopping center, recreational areas, and a metro station. It is also a large-scale application of GSHP-BTES in Finland. Accurate monitoring of the energy system is crucial for sustainable and efficient long-term operation, and a novel methodology for adjusting data consistency has been developed.

A comparative study on borehole heat exchanger size for direct ground coupled cooling systems using active chilled beams and TABS

Taha Arghand et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sizing of BHEs for direct ground cooling systems, with a focus on the influence of terminal unit types and their operating strategies. Results show that using TABS instead of ACBs reduces ground peak hourly loads and requires a shorter BHE depth, but results in warmer indoor temperatures.

Cooling of office buildings in cold climates using direct ground-coupled active chilled beams

Taha Arghand et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of a direct ground cooling system (DGCS) using active chilled beams for the cooling of office buildings in Sweden. The results show that the thermal comfort criteria in the room are met by applying the DGCS even under the most critical design conditions of undisturbed ground temperature and internal heat gains, and there is a high correlation between BHE length and room temperature levels.
