Probabilistic Incremental Dynamic Analysis for Seismic Isolation Systems through Integration with the NHERI-SimCenter Performance-Based Engineering Application

Mohammad AlHamaydeh et al.

Summary: In response to the Northridge earthquake in 1994 and the Kobe earthquake in 1995, structural designers shifted from deterministic design approaches to performance-based engineering concepts. This involved evaluating designs based on stakeholders' interests rather than engineering parameters, requiring probabilistic estimation of variables throughout the design process. The NHERI-SimCenter application framework offers generic solutions for different hazard simulation problems. Seismic isolation, a proven technique for enhancing seismic performance, necessitates careful calibration of system parameters and accounting for uncertainties through multiple simulations. This research introduces components for seismic isolation and integrates them with framework modules including uncertainty quantification and damage estimation, with an illustrative case study highlighting the impacts of this development.

Design Optimization of a Hybrid Vibration Control System for Buildings

Basel Salaas et al.

Summary: A passive hybrid control system consisting of a base-isolation subsystem and a tuned liquid column damper system was investigated for controlling high-rise structures under seismic excitations. The systems were optimized and numerical simulations were performed, showing that the base-isolation subsystem reduces structural responses by lowering the fundamental natural frequency, while the tuned liquid column damper system protects the base-isolation subsystem and reduces its displacements. Therefore, the proposed passive hybrid control system effectively reduces the structural responses under seismic excitations.

Study on the Basic Performance Deterioration Law and the Application of Lead Rubber Bearings under the Alternation of Aging and Seawater Erosion

Yanmin Li et al.

Summary: Lead rubber isolation bearings are commonly used to reduce the seismic responses of bridges, but they are vulnerable to aging and seawater erosion. This study conducted aging and seawater erosion cycles testing on the bearings and rubber materials, determined the rubber material parameters, and obtained the time-varying law of the bearings' basic performance. The study also investigated the impact of the degradation of the bearings on the seismic performance of offshore bridge structures.

Direct displacement-based design approach for isolated structures equipped with supplemental fluid viscous damper

Mohtasham Mohebbi et al.

Summary: This paper extends the direct displacement-based design approach for isolated structures equipped with supplemental fluid viscous damper, showing effective performance under far-field earthquakes but unreliability under near-field earthquakes. The proposed method is validated as an effective design approach for isolated structures equipped with supplemental FVD.

Machine learning-based prediction for maximum displacement of seismic isolation systems

Hoang D. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study developed machine learning models to predict the peak lateral displacements of seismic isolation systems. The random forest model showed the best performance, and the normalized characteristic strength was found to be the most influential variable. Furthermore, a practical analysis and comparison demonstrated the effectiveness and limitations of the developed model.

Experimental seismic performance of a base-isolated building with displacement limiters

Hongkai Du et al.

Summary: The study investigates the feasibility and effectiveness of applying displacement limiting devices to base-isolated buildings through extensive shake table tests. The results show that a proper combination of soft limiter stiffness and reserved gap can effectively limit the isolated base displacement response.
