The impact patterns of classroom lighting parameters on visual fatigue and a mathematical model

Rui Dang et al.

Summary: In the classroom, unfavorable non-visual impacts can lead to visual fatigue, affecting learning efficiency and eye health. This study introduced the concept of luminance gradients and defined 20 lighting parameters based on luminance and correlated color temperature (CCT) to effectively reduce visual fatigue. By combining subjective questionnaire surveys and critical flicker-fusion frequency tests, four parameters (D31, D12, Lm, CCT) with significant impact on visual fatigue were identified, and an optimal range of lighting parameters for reducing visual fatigue was established. Furthermore, a mathematical model (VF = g(D31, D12, Lm, CCT)) was developed as a quantitative tool for evaluating and improving classroom lighting quality.

Modeling perceptions of very small space in physical dimension: Effect of the form of line light-emitting units with preference

Tianyi Chen et al.

Summary: Lighting design is a cost-effective solution to enhance perceptions of very small spaces. This study identifies users' preferences for line light-emitting units and finds that illuminance and correlated color temperature (CCT) play important roles in determining the perceived brightness, spaciousness, privacy, comfort, and relaxation of very small spaces. Additionally, a function is proposed to quantify the effect of lighting on spatial perceptions based on objective weighting. These findings provide a foundation for lighting design in very small spaces.

Grayscale-luminance converting polynomial function for digital images to determine Feu and Lav in a low-contrast artificial lit space

P. Chen et al.

Summary: This article proposes a method to determine the spatial luminance coefficient and average luminance from digital images, using a grayscale-luminance converting function and an acceptability index to reduce the required measurement points. Experimental results demonstrate that this method produces more accurate results compared to traditional methods.

Extending the lighting design objectives procedure for holistic lighting solutions

C. Cuttle

Summary: The author has proposed a lighting design objectives procedure (LiDOs) that has been successfully adopted by lighting design practices. This paper proposes developing the procedure into a computer-based lighting design tool (LiDOs2) that includes additional objectives related to spectral and temporal illumination distributions. The LiDOs2 procedure would enable practitioners to conduct informed searches for light sources and luminaires, and to determine layouts and control circuits with confidence that the specified objectives would be achieved.

Study on the Relationship between Restoration Benefit and Visual Satisfaction of LONG-PLAN's Indoor Vertical Greenery

Lei Xiao et al.

Summary: This study examines the psychological restoration benefits of indoor vertical greenery and its relationship with visual satisfaction. The results show that indoor vertical greenery has a positive impact on the subjective restoration of respondents. Factors such as being away, fascination and compatibility, and the extent of environmental restoration are significantly correlated with the visual satisfaction of indoor vertical greenery.

Eye tracking: empirical foundations for a minimal reporting guideline

Kenneth Holmqvist et al.

Summary: This article reviews the impact of various aspects of eye-tracking studies, including the instrument used, methodology, environment, and participants, on the quality of recorded eye-tracking data and obtained eye-movement and gaze measures. It compares existing reporting guidelines with empirical research and published studies and reveals significant variations and inconsistencies. A minimal and flexible reporting guideline is derived based on empirical findings.

Instantaneous lighting quality within higher educational classrooms in Singapore

Zhe Kong et al.

Summary: The study found that lecture halls with electric lighting have more uniform lighting distributions, while computer labs and collaborative learning spaces with daylighting have relatively lower daylighting conditions. Additionally, horizontal illuminance or mean luminance of specific bands are effective predictors for controlling lighting levels and subjective lighting comfort in different types of classrooms.
