Plastic rod as a promising feed material for enhanced performance of ultrasonic plasticization microinjection molding: Plasticization rate, mechanical and thermal properties

Wangqing Wu et al.

Summary: A measurement method for the plasticization rate of ultrasonic plasticization microinjection molding was proposed. The effect of ultrasonic amplitude on the plasticization rate and properties of polypropylene (PP) rods was investigated. Results showed that the plasticization rate increased by 186% with the increase of ultrasonic amplitude. The mechanical and thermal properties of the PP samples remained stable, with improved thermal properties after ultrasonic plasticization.

3D-assembled microneedle ion sensor-based wearable system for the transdermal monitoring of physiological ion fluctuations

Xinshuo Huang et al.

Summary: Monitoring human health is crucial in biomedicine, and blood ion concentrations serve as important reference indicators for many diseases. Microneedle array-based sensors have enabled continuous health monitoring by being minimally invasive. In this study, we developed a microneedle sensing-array integrated system that can continuously detect subcutaneous ions for real-time human health monitoring. The system overcomes limitations in preparing 3D microneedle structures with multiple electrode channels and tackles challenges in modifying closely spaced microneedle tips into different types of electrodes. The system exhibits sufficient sensitivity and good detection performance, as demonstrated by in vivo experiments on rats. By integrating the sensor into a wearable monitoring system, it can potentially provide feedback on diseases related to physiological ion changes.

Determination of Transdermal Rate of Metallic Microneedle Array through an Impedance Measurements-Based Numerical Check Screening Algorithm

Jingshan Mo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a method based on impedance measurements and numerical check screening algorithm to determine the transdermal rate of metallic microneedle arrays. Different sizes of metallic sheet microneedle array sensors were fabricated to evaluate different transdermal rates, and in vitro sensing experiments confirmed the effect of transdermal rate on sensing outcomes. Two methods for calculating the transdermal rate were derived, providing foundations for real-time transdermal rate estimation.

Summary: This paper introduces a silicon carbide microneedle with six lumens, a total length of about 350 μm, and inner and outer diameters of 30 μm and 52 μm respectively. The microneedle's performance is analyzed using COMSOL multiphysics software, an optimized microneedle tip is designed, and flow analyses of various viscosity based fluids inside the microneedle are conducted. Simulation results confirm that the proposed microneedle successfully penetrates a skin model and remains intact.

Summary: In this study, a robust method for fabricating mass-customizable master molds for sharp-tipped biodegradable polymer microneedles is developed. The method combines predrying and chip casting (PCC) with substrateless, inclined, and rotational exposure (SIR exposure), and has been proven to be highly compatible with almost all existing biodegradable polymers. The findings of this study contribute to a significant growth of dissolving microneedle-mediated drug delivery and enhance the understanding of drug release kinetics.

Simulation assisted design for microneedle manufacturing: Computational modeling of two-photon templated electrodeposition

Summary: The hybrid additive methodology of twophoton templated electrodeposition (2PTE) allows for the fabrication of fully metallic micrometer-scale 3D architectures with complex geometries, such as microneedles, for precision surgical applications. However, challenges arise from electrochemical deposition of metals into thick 3D lithography patterns, leading to potential and chemical gradients that affect design limitations. Numerical modeling serves as a design tool to predict growth and explore geometric constraints of manufacturing complicated 3D metallic structures through the 2PTE method.
