Colon targeted releases and uptakes of paclitaxel loaded in modified porous starch

Beibei Zhao et al.

Summary: Hyaluronic acid can modify porous starch to achieve high efficiency of paclitaxel entrapment and drug loading. The paclitaxel-loaded particles were coated with chitosanphytic acid to target the colon. In vivo imaging showed targeted release of paclitaxel in the colon and reduced distribution in main organs compared to raw paclitaxel. Cell internalization of paclitaxel mediated by hyaluronic acid was significantly higher, resulting in marked cell apoptosis. The hyaluronic acid-modified porous starch system is an effective method for high-load and targeted release of hydrophobic anticancer drugs.

The impact of organic fertilizer replacement on greenhouse gas emissions and its influencing factors

Zijian He et al.

Summary: Although the effects of organic fertilizers replacing chemical fertilizers on greenhouse gas emissions are inconsistent, this global meta-analysis study found that organic fertilizers significantly decreased N2O emissions but increased CH4 and CO2 emissions, leading to an increase in global warming potential. Factors such as climate conditions, soil conditions, crop types, and agricultural practices influenced the greenhouse gas emissions and global warming potential. Organic C and available N level in fertilizers were found to be the main factors affecting greenhouse gas emissions and global warming potential. Optimizing fertilizer organic C, C/N, and N substitution rate showed potential for reducing global warming potential.

Preparation and structural properties of starch phosphate modified by alkaline phosphatase

Menghan Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a method for synthesizing starch phosphate using the transferase properties of alkaline phosphatase was successfully explored. The crystallinity and enthalpy of the phosphorylated samples were reduced by up to 26.8% and 23.3%, respectively, and the grafting of phosphate radicals was further confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry.

Advances in the colon-targeted chitosan based multiunit drug delivery systems for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease

Nilesh Kulkarni et al.

Summary: Chitosan, a cationic polymer with biodegradability, is a suitable choice for colon-targeted drug delivery in inflammatory bowel disease. Its ability to attach strongly to mucosa and interact with anionic polymers enables safe and efficient delivery to the colon. Compared to commercial grade gastro-resistant polymers, chitosan is considered safer for long-term therapy in chronic diseases.

Nested order-disorder framework containing a crystalline matrix with self-filled amorphous-like innards

Kejun Bu et al.

Summary: Solids can be categorized into crystalline and amorphous states, with their properties determined by the interactions among atoms. By combining the advantages of ordered and disordered components, hybrid structures can be designed to have unique properties. The researchers discovered a nested order-disorder framework (NOF) where a crystalline matrix contains self-filled amorphous-like innards. This structure exhibits both low thermal conductivity and metallic electrical conductivity, showcasing a new category of materials that bridge crystalline and amorphous forms at the sublattice level.

Polysaccharide-coated porous starch-based oral carrier for paclitaxel: Adsorption and sustained release in colon

Beibei Zhao et al.

Summary: A porous starch-based carrier coated with chitosan-phytic acid was developed to enhance drug delivery to the colon. The results showed improved drug loading and entrapment efficiency by size/shape matching and adsorption force. Chitosan-phytic acid provided a second protection and enhanced drug release in the colon. The study also confirmed non-covalent interactions between starch and the drug.

Comparison of bioaccessibility of astaxanthin encapsulated in starch-based double emulsion with different structures

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: Different types of starch-based double emulsion (SDE) structures were developed to improve the bioavailability of astaxanthin (AST), with A-type and B-type SDE structures showing smaller droplet diameters and higher stability after simulated gastric digestion. The bioaccessibility of AST-loaded SDEs prepared with HAS was found to be six times higher than digested unencapsulated AST. Thus, SDEs are considered suitable carriers for liposoluble nutrient delivery and bioavailability in various products.
