Humidity Sensors Based on Magnetic Ionic Liquids Blended in Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)

Joao P. Serra et al.

Summary: PVDF-HFP films incorporating different types of imidazolium ionic liquids with different magnetic anions and imidazolium cation chain lengths have been developed for humidity-sensing applications. The IL/PVDF-HFP composites exhibit a porous structure independently of the IL anion type and cation chain length. The inclusion of ILs induces polymer crystallization into the electroactive beta phase, with the most noticeable increase observed for PVDF-HFP/[Bmim][FeCl4]. The hybrid samples show a decrease in thermal stability and yield strength, with PVDF-HFP/[Bmim]2[Co(SCN)4] samples experiencing the most significant decrease. PVDF-HFP/[Bmim]2[Co-(SCN)4] and PVDF-HFP/[Bmim][FeCl4] composites display the highest magnetization. The PVDF-HFP/[Bmim]2[CoCl4] composite exhibits the highest relative humidity sensing response. The developed IL/polymer composites show potential for humidity sensing applications.

Humidity-Driven Dynamic Based on Polystyrene-Contained Gelatin (Gel-PS) and PDMS Bilayer Wrinkling System

Shanfeng Zhu et al.

Summary: A simple and robust fabrication strategy for creating a dynamic hierarchical surface wrinkle using a bilayer wrinkling system is presented in this study. By controlling the humidity in the environment and leveraging the different sensitivity of the exposed high modulus regions and the unexposed soft regions, various dynamic hierarchical structures can be achieved. This wrinkled surface is a promising candidate in applications such as dynamic displays, optical smart windows, and anti-counterfeiting.

Switchable and Tunable Chemical/Structure Color in a Flexible Hierarchical Surface

Bo Li et al.

Summary: Using interfacial Au catalysis in soft lithography, a flexible surface with a unique hierarchical structure, incorporating both chemical color transparency change and structure coloration, is developed. The surface transitions from nontransparent to transparent under biaxial strains, followed by a shift in iridescent structure color from blue to red. These switchable and dynamical tunable mechanochromic characteristics are demonstrated in a smart window, with potential applications in flexible devices with optical multiple functionality.

Integrated sensing from the synergetic color change of the center/brush of cholesteric liquid crystal particles

Yuanyuan Shang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel integrated sensing system based on the synergetic color change from the center and the brush structure of CLC particles. By mixing reactive mesogens, a reactive chiral dopant, a non-reactive LC molecule, and a photoinitiator, CLC particles are prepared and exhibit gorgeous color at the center and brush structure upon various solvent stimuli.
