Enhanced C-O Functionality on Carbon Papers Ensures Lowering Nucleation Delay of ALD for Ru towards Unprecedented Alkaline HER Activity

Sitaramanjaneya M. Thalluri et al.

Summary: The nucleation delay for ALD of Ru on carbon surfaces has been successfully reduced by constructive pretreatments, enhancing the C-O functionality. Ru species deposition on carbon papers (CP) was achieved with a minimum number of ALD cycles (25 cycles) and good conformality. Development of electrocatalysts from single atoms to nanoparticles on conductive supports with low metal loadings is crucial for improving electrocatalysis performance.

Effective electronic tuning of Pt single atoms via heterogeneous atomic coordination of (Co,Ni)(OH)2 for efficient hydrogen evolution

An Pei et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel Pt-1/(Co,Ni)(OH)(2)/C single-atom catalyst (SAC) that exhibits superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity compared to other catalysts. Notably, this catalyst shows almost zero onset overpotential and high electrocatalytic mass activity for HER. Operando Raman spectra and DFT calculations confirm the electronic synergy between Pt single atoms and bimetallic (Co,Ni)(OH)(2), which contributes to the enhanced catalytic performance.

Summary: Hydrogen, known as the energy source of the future, is an excellent energy carrier. Electrolysis of water is the only green method for hydrogen production. However, the cost of electrolysis for hydrogen production is still high, and there is a need to develop economical catalysts with high catalytic efficiency. This study aimed to prepare cathode electrodes by depositing Ni, Sn, and Co on a nickel mesh support material and investigate their abilities in hydrogen evolution reaction.

Summary: Despite a long history and recent progress, the chemical behavior of graphene oxide (GO) remains not fully understood. The high cation exchange capacity of GO, as well as its interaction with metals, has been a subject of study, revealing a coordinate-covalent bonding nature. Is Pt/C More Electrocatalytic than Ru/C for Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline Electrolytes?

Ru-Yang Shao et al.

Summary: Contrary to previous studies on bulk metals, nanoparticles of Ru supported on carbon (Ru/C) exhibit higher electrocatalytic performance for alkaline hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) compared to Pt supported on carbon (Pt/C). Both commercial and homemade Ru/C catalysts are even more active than most reported Ru-based materials, suggesting that Ru/C should be used as a benchmark material for evaluating the alkaline HER performance of catalysts instead of Pt/C.
