Automated Approach to In Vitro Image-Guided Photothermal Therapy with Top-Down and Bottom-Up-Synthesized Graphene Quantum Dots

Bong Lee et al.

Summary: Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) show high light-to-heat conversion efficiency and excellent biocompatibility, making them promising for photothermal therapy. In this study, GQDs such as reduced graphene quantum dots (RGQDs) and hyaluronic acid graphene quantum dots (HGQDs) were tested and proved to have substantial NIR absorption and fluorescence, allowing for in vivo imaging and tumor ablation. The experiments conducted using HeLa cancer cells demonstrated that GQDs can heat the cells up to 54.5°C and significantly inhibit cell viability. The fluorescence of GQDs indicates their successful internalization into the cells, suggesting their potential as cancer theragnostics agents.

Dual-Mode Fluorescence/Ultrasound Imaging with Biocompatible Metal-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots

Alina R. Valimukhametova et al.

Summary: Sonography offers advantages of non-invasiveness, deep tissue penetration, and low cost. The combination of ultrasound contrast agents with visible and NIR fluorophores can overcome the lack of high precision imaging. Metal-doped NGQDs demonstrate high-contrast ultrasound brightness mode properties and visible/NIR fluorescence imaging capabilities. They have potential for various theragnostic applications.

Manganese-nitrogen and gadolinium-nitrogen Co-doped graphene quantum dots as bimodal magnetic resonance and fluorescence imaging nanoprobes

Bong Han Lee et al.

Summary: Novel Mn2+ or Gd3+ doped nitrogen-containing graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) have been developed to provide deep tissue MRI capabilities to graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and render contrast agents biocompatible. These dual-modal contrast agents exhibit high in vitro biocompatibility and effective internalization in cells, showing potential for both T1 and T2 contrast imaging.

Effects of Doxorubicin Delivery by Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots on Cancer Cell Growth: Experimental Study and Mathematical Modeling

Madison Frieler et al.

Summary: This study introduced a new dual experimental/modeling approach to decrease the IC50 of cancer cell growth by delivering drugs using N-GQDs and achieving the same therapeutic effect with lower doses. By including E-max value and being independent of measurement time, a more consistent cancer cell growth modeling method was developed.

Near-infrared emitting graphene quantum dots synthesized from reduced graphene oxide for in vitro/in vivo/ex vivo bioimaging applications

Md Tanvir Hasan et al.

Summary: RGQDs, synthesized for the first time, are nanometer-sized graphene quantum dots derived from reduced graphene oxide, with NIR emission and high biocompatibility, suitable for bioimaging and therapeutic delivery. Through a high-yield synthetic process, RGQDs exhibit efficient internalization in cells and fluorescence tracking in live mice, presenting a new potential for NIR imaging in live animal models.
