LC-MS/MS methods for the determination of 30 quaternary ammonium compounds including benzalkonium and paraquat in human serum and urine

Zhong-Min Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a method using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed for the determination of various disinfectants, including BACs, ATMACs, DDACs, and QACs, in human serum and urine. The method involved the use of isotopically labelled internal standards and solid-phase extraction. Different LC columns were utilized for the separation of different compounds. The method showed good sensitivity and accuracy, and it was able to detect the presence of QACs and their metabolites in human serum and urine.

Simultaneous determination of triclosan, triclocarban and p-chloro-m-xylenol in disinfectant, personal care products and oiltment by nonaqueous capillary electrophoresis

Jiang Ruoke et al.

Summary: Triclosan, triclocarban, and p-chloro-m-xylenol are widely used antibiotics, but the existing analytical method has issues such as exceeding the declared contents and consuming large amounts of methanol. Therefore, a new nonaqueous capillary electrophoresis method was developed to simultaneously analyze these compounds. This method is efficient, simple, and environmentally friendly, and it is hoped that it will be incorporated into the national standard method in the future.

Quaternary Ammonium Salts: Insights into Synthesis and New Directions in Antibacterial Applications

Zhenyang Zhou et al.

Summary: The overuse of antibiotics has resulted in the increase of antibiotic-resistant genes in bacteria. To combat this issue, a fungicide with a different antibacterial mechanism from antibiotics is needed. Quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) have shown promise as they have good antibacterial properties and can reduce the likelihood of bacteria developing drug resistance. This review focuses on the synthesis and application of different types of QASs and provides insight into their structure-function relationships, aiming to explore more applications of QASs in antimicrobial research for clinical use.

Quaternary ammonium compounds of emerging concern: Classification, occurrence, fate, toxicity and antimicrobial resistance

Sanjeeb Mohapatra et al.

Summary: Amplified hygiene and precautionary measures are necessary to control COVID-19, but may lead to increased use and discharge of disinfectants, particularly quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). This review discusses the classification and mechanism of disinfectants, with a focus on QACs, and highlights the occurrence, fate, toxicity, and antimicrobial resistance associated with QACs. Evidence shows a significant rise in the mass load of QACs at wastewater treatment plants and higher concentrations in residential dust during the pandemic, posing potential risks to human health and the environment.

Determination of Benzalkonium Chloride in a Disinfectant by UV Spectrophotometry and Gas and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography: Validation, Comparison of Characteristics, and Economic Feasibility

Mariia Smolinska et al.

Summary: Simple, fast, and validated UV-spectrophotometric, HPLC, and GC methods were developed for analyzing benzalkonium chloride in a disinfectant. These methods were validated according to ICH guidelines and showed accuracy, precision, linearity, and robustness. The UV method was based on measuring light absorption, the HPLC method used a C18 column with a specific mobile phase, and the GC method used a flame ionization detector.
