On the optimal presence strategies for workplace during pandemics: A COVID-19 inspired probabilistic model

Mansoor Davoodi et al.

Summary: During pandemics like COVID-19, the quality and quantity of services offered by businesses and organizations have been severely impacted. In order to overcome this problem, a hybrid home office setup has been applied, although it may lower employee productivity. The aim of this paper is to find a trade-off solution between increasing office presence and reducing the risk of infection.

Robust optimization model for medical staff rebalancing problem with data contamination during COVID-19 pandemic

Xuehong Gao et al.

Summary: This study delves into the issue of rebalancing medical staff with contaminated data and proposes two robust optimization models to mitigate the negative effects. Through a real case study from the U.S., it is found that the proposed methods can overcome the impacts of data contamination, providing deep managerial implications and actionable insights regarding cooperation mechanisms and medical staff rebalancing strategies.

Reducing disease spread through optimization: Limiting mixture of the population is more important than limiting group sizes

Niels-Christian Fink Bagger et al.

Summary: This paper studies the use of individualized strategies to limit contact between people during a pandemic and reduce disease spread. By formulating contact as a graph and using a mathematical algorithm, the study demonstrates that individualized reopening strategies can significantly reduce infection and limit quarantine population compared to just limiting group size.

Modeling a flexible staff scheduling problem in the Era of Covid-19

Francesca Guerriero et al.

Summary: This study proposes optimization models to address flexible staff scheduling issues during the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on anti-Covid-19 measures, employee needs, and work/life balance. Empirical results demonstrate that these models can enhance employee satisfaction while ensuring work continuity and safety.

Staff scheduling for residential care under pandemic conditions: The case of COVID-19

Amirhossein Moosavi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the scheduling methods in residential care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and proposes an improved approach. By introducing new objective functions and constraints, the basic problem is redefined and solved using a population-based heuristic algorithm. The results show that the heuristic algorithm outperforms benchmark solution approaches in terms of solution quality and CPU time.

Personnel scheduling during Covid-19 pandemic

Giorgio Zucchi et al.

Summary: This paper discusses a real-life personnel scheduling problem in a large Italian pharmaceutical distribution warehouse during the Covid-19 pandemic. It proposes a mixed integer linear programming solution and shows that the optimal schedule generated by the model outperforms the one produced by the company. Additionally, scalability tests on larger random instances demonstrate high quality solutions can be achieved within reasonable CPU time using an open-source MILP solver.

Efficacy of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AZD1222) vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern 202012/01 (B.1.1.7): an exploratory analysis of a randomised controlled trial

Katherine R. W. Emary et al.

Summary: A post-hoc analysis was conducted on the efficacy of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine against the B.1.1.7 variant of SARS-CoV-2 in the UK. The vaccine showed reduced neutralisation activity against the B.1.1.7 variant in vitro, but still demonstrated efficacy against the B.1.1.7 variant of the virus.
