Comparison of EMG activity in shank muscles between individuals with and without chronic ankle instability when running on a treadmill

Abdulkerim Darendeli et al.

Summary: Changes in movement capabilities after an ankle injury may lead to adaptations in the peripheral and central nervous system. This study compared the electromyogram (EMG) profile of ankle stabilizer muscles and stride-time variation during treadmill running in individuals with and without chronic ankle instability (CAI). The results indicate that individuals with CAI exhibit altered activation strategies for ankle stabilizer muscles and greater stride-time variability when running on a treadmill.

The effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation to the ankle pronators on neural excitability & functional status in patients with chronic ankle instability

Alan R. Needle et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of a 2-week NMES or TENS intervention on neural excitability, performance, and patient-reported function in patients with CAI. The results showed that TENS can improve reflexive excitability to the ankle pronators, but these changes did not significantly impact clinical function.

Effects of Conservative Interventions on Static and Dynamic Balance in Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Yuta Koshino et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine effective conservative interventions for static and dynamic balance in patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI). The results showed that whole-body vibration training (WBVT) was significantly more effective than controls for both static and dynamic balance. Balance training (BT) and joint mobilization were also significantly more effective than controls for dynamic balance. These findings provide valuable insights for the treatment of balance impairments in patients with CAI.

Ankle kinematics during a drop-vertical jump in patients with chronic ankle instability and healthy controls: A bivariate confidence interval comparison

C. C. Herb et al.

Summary: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is associated with frontal and sagittal plane kinematic differences during landing tasks. Single plane kinematics may be limited in assessing joint motion, while bivariate confidence interval analysis allows for statistical comparison considering multiple planes of motion.

Which Functional Tests and Self-Reported Questionnaires Can Help Clinicians Make Valid Return to Sport Decisions in Patients With Chronic Ankle Instability? A Narrative Review and Expert Opinion

Brice Picot et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the most relevant functional performance tests and self-reported questionnaires to guide clinicians in their return to sport (RTS) decision-making for patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI). The results showed that the single leg stance test on firm surfaces, the modified version of the star excursion balance test, the side hop test, and the figure-of-8 test were the most relevant functional performance tests for targeting ankle impairments in patients with CAI. A combination of the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) and the Ankle Ligament Reconstruction-Return to Sport after Injury (ALR-RSI) questionnaires were the most relevant self-reported questionnaires to assess patient function in the context of CAI. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the relevance of the proposed test cluster in RTS decision-making following lateral ankle sprain injury and CAI.

A systematic review of center of pressure measures to quantify gait changes in older adults

Sina Mehdizadeh et al.

Summary: Measures of gait center of pressure (COP) can be used to characterize gait quality in older adults and its relationship to falls. Older adults exhibit a more medial COP trajectory in normal walking and lower average anterior-posterior and medio-lateral COP displacements and velocity in both gait initiation and obstacle crossing.

Effects of elastic ankle support on running ankle kinematics in individuals with chronic ankle instability and healthy controls

Andreas Stotz et al.

Summary: Elastic ankle support reduces the range of sagittal plane running ankle kinematics in individuals with chronic ankle instability but not in healthy controls. The study suggests that the use of ankle support may help reduce the risk of injuries in individuals with CAI.
