Beat alignment ability is associated with formal musical training not current music playing

Connor Spiech et al.

Summary: The ability to perceive beat in music is important for both listeners and players. This study compared the beat alignment ability of active musicians, inactive musicians, and nonmusicians using the Computerized Adaptive Beat Alignment Test (CA-BAT). While initial tests showed that active musicians performed better, further analysis revealed that there was no significant difference when taking into account differences in musical training. Results suggest that perceiving fine differences in beat is not solely dependent on continued practice or engagement, but rather on the amount of musical training received.

Summary: Musicians demonstrate superior speech-in-noise abilities compared to non-musicians, which is not influenced by age, IQ, or speech task parameters. These effects may be attributed to changes due to music training or inherent auditory advantages in musicianship.

A specific relationship between musical sophistication and auditory working memory

Meher Lad et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between musical sophistication and measures of perception and working memory for sound. The results suggest a specific association between musical sophistication and working memory for sound frequency, while no significant association was found with working memory for amplitude modulation rate or perception of acoustic features.

Neural plasticity: The substratum of music-based interventions in neurorehabilitation

Diya Chatterjee et al.

Summary: The plastic nature of the human brain allows for experience and training-based changes leading to functional recovery. Music serves as a useful model for neurorehabilitation through neuroplastic changes, with Neurologic Music Therapy contributing to this field. Music-based interventions have been successful in training neural networks and inducing multimodal effects on sensorimotor, language, cognitive, and affective functions.

Sex differences in auditory processing vary across estrous cycle

Jennifer Krizman et al.

Summary: Research suggests that female rodents process sound harmonics more robustly than males, and this difference is related to levels of circulating estrogen. Hormonal differences, specifically estrogen signaling, may underlie sex differences in harmonic encoding in rodents.

Diotic and Dichotic Mechanisms of Discrimination Threshold in Musicians and Non-Musicians

Devin Inabinet et al.

Summary: The study investigated the discrimination thresholds of musicians and non-musicians to different types of sounds, finding that musicians had better processing of harmonic complexes. The results suggest that music-related plasticity benefits multiple mechanisms of pitch encoding, with subjective self-report of musical ability being reliably associated with objective measures of perception.

The Microstructural Plasticity of the Arcuate Fasciculus Undergirds Improved Speech in Noise Perception in Musicians

Xiaonan Li et al.

Summary: Musical training is associated with improved language skills, with musicians showing differences in white matter features and brain hemodynamics related to speech perception. The differential microstructural plasticity of bilateral arcuate fasciculus segments may serve as a neural foundation for the cross-domain transfer effect of musical experience to speech perception.

Summary: The study found that children receiving daily, focused musical training performed better in pitch discrimination abilities compared to students attending music class only once per week. This suggests that more in-depth and frequent musical training may be linked to improved pitch discrimination abilities in children.
