Risk and Protective Factors for COVID-19 Morbidity, Severity, and Mortality

Jin-jin Zhang et al.

Summary: The outbreak of COVID-19 has become a global health crisis, with various factors such as age, sex, comorbidities, and racial/ethnic disparities influencing its morbidity. Children tend to experience milder illnesses, and factors like a healthy diet, sufficient nutrition, vaccination, and atopic conditions may act as protective factors. The effects of current therapies for COVID-19 and the bidirectional relationship between asthma and COVID-19 are still unclear.

Clinical Severity in Different Waves of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Sicily: A Model of Smith's Law of Declining Virulence from Real-World Data

Emanuele Amodio et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the severity of each variant of concern (VOC) among SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals by investigating clinical outcomes such as death, ICU admissions, intubations, and severe critical symptoms. The results showed that Delta and wild-type variants had a higher risk compared to the Omicron strain for developing severe COVID-19 leading to intubation and death. Additionally, males and older individuals appeared to be more susceptible to developing the worst clinical outcomes considered.

A Systematic Review on the Safety and Efficacy of COVID-19 Vaccines Approved in Saudi Arabia

Thekra Ali Alhandod et al.

Summary: Comprehensive safety and efficacy studies of COVID-19 vaccines can alleviate concerns about adverse reactions and duration of protection. A systemic review was conducted on four COVID-19 vaccines approved in Saudi Arabia (AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna, and Janssen) using published articles from electronic databases. The review analyzed eighteen articles and found the vaccines to be safe and effective, with common local and systemic reactions reported. Efficacy was above the WHO threshold, but precautions are necessary for special populations and further studies are needed on rare adverse events.

Humoral Response in Hemodialysis Patients Post-SARS-CoV-2 mRNA Vaccination: A Systematic Review of Literature

Kin Israel Notarte et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to assess the humoral response of hemodialysis patients post-mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. A total of nine studies met the inclusion criteria, and the results showed that hemodialysis patients developed lower antibody levels compared to the control group. These findings imply the need for robust vaccination strategies to address waning immune responses in vulnerable populations.

Exploration of Sex and Age-Based Associations in Clinical Characteristics, Predictors of Severity, and Duration of Stay among COVID-19 Patients at the University Hospital of Saudi Arabia

Rasha Assad Assiri et al.

Summary: The severity of COVID-19 infection varies among populations due to their demographic features, co-morbidities, and immune system reactions. This study aimed to investigate the clinical features and predictors of severe disease, as well as factors affecting hospital stay. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using medical records from March 2020 to July 2021, which included 443 confirmed cases. The results showed that age, comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension, pneumonia, ICU stay, and mechanical ventilation were predictors of disease severity. The median length of hospital stay was six days and was longer in patients with severe disease and those treated with systemic intravenous steroids.

Echocardiography phenotypes of right ventricular involvement in COVID-19 ARDS patients and ICU mortality: post-hoc (exploratory) analysis of repeated data from the ECHO-COVID study

Stephen Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between different phenotypes of right ventricular (RV) involvement and mortality in the intensive care unit (ICU) in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Post-hoc analysis of longitudinal data from the ECHO-COVID observational study showed that RV involvement is prevalent in patients ventilated for COVID-19 ARDS and different phenotypes of RV involvement may lead to different ICU mortality, with acute cor pulmonale (ACP) having the worst outcome.

Impact of COVID-19 vaccination on the risk of developing long-COVID and on existing long-COVID symptoms: A systematic review

Kin Israel Notarte et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigates the association between COVID-19 vaccination and long-COVID symptoms. The findings suggest that vaccination is associated with reduced risks of long-COVID, with preliminary evidence showing that two doses are more effective than one dose. The impact of vaccination on people with existing long-COVID symptoms is still controversial.

Full and simplified assessment of left ventricular diastolic function in covid-19 patients admitted to ICU: Feasibility, incidence, and association with mortality

Luigi La Via et al.

Summary: This study assessed the incidence of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) in COVID-19 patients and its association with mortality. The findings suggest that LVDD assessment is feasible in most COVID-19 patients using the latest guidelines. Non-survivors had a trend towards higher incidence of LVDD and exhibited significantly worse cardiac function.

Summary: Common comorbidities in mechanically ventilated COVID-19 patients in the Al-Ahsa region of Saudi Arabia include diabetes, hypertension, other cardiovascular diseases, and chronic kidney disease. Age over 60, chronic kidney disease, insulin use, and loop diuretic use are major predictors of mortality.

Summary: The evidence regarding the role of HP therapy in COVID-19 is inconclusive due to the low quality of included studies. Most studies reported a decrease in IL-6 levels after HP treatment, but there was a wide variability in techniques and outcomes reported. Prospective randomized data are needed to draw strong conclusions.

Summary: This study critically analyzed the clinical and biological characteristics of 134 patients from the North African Mediterranean region with COVID-19, finding that factors such as age, comorbidities, gender, and infection type were associated with disease progression to a severe state. Abnormalities in certain parameters were closely linked to disease deterioration.
