'You have to have a level of trust': Consumer-described health literacy barriers and enablers to engaging with health care professionals

Helen Wood et al.

Summary: Health literacy is crucial for consumers to engage with non-physician healthcare professionals. Consumers reported that the clinical skills and interpersonal skills of healthcare professionals were important enablers for engagement. However, a lack of developed interpersonal skills and inconsistent information from healthcare professionals were identified as barriers. Providing clear health information and education on information appraisal for consumers with lower health literacy can promote effective engagement.

Student Health and Social Care Professionals' Health Literacy Knowledge: An Exploratory Study

Helen Wood et al.

Summary: Health literacy is crucial for shared decision-making and improving health outcomes. However, many patients lack sufficient health literacy and require additional support from professionals. This research examined the health literacy knowledge of students in five health and social care disciplines in Australia. The findings showed that students had a limited understanding of health literacy principles and lacked knowledge in areas such as health information access and helping patients with inadequate health literacy. It is imperative to further explore health literacy education to address these gaps.

Developing a global practice-based framework of person-centred care from primary data: a cross-national qualitative study with patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals

Alessandra Giusti et al.

Summary: This study explores the specific practices and new domains of person-centred care (PCC) across different middle-income countries through in-depth qualitative research, and proposes a globally applicable framework and recommendations for PCC. The findings suggest that implementing PCC requires specific structural features of the healthcare system, and should take into account interdependency and collectivism, bringing care into the home and community, equity and non-discrimination, addressing health and illness within the context of limited resources, and supporting the well-being of the workforce.
