Nitrogen dynamics in soils fertilized with digestate and mineral fertilizers: A full field approach

Massimo Zilio et al.

Summary: A three-year plot trial comparing highly stabilized digestate from sewage sludge and digestate-derived ammonium sulphate with synthetic mineral fertilizers in open fields showed that digestate fertilization increased organic N content in soil without causing nitrate leaching. The nitrogen fate study indicated similar effects of digestate and synthetic fertilizers on ammonia emissions, N uptake in crops, and denitrification activity, but synthetic fertilizers emitted more N2O. Soil analysis suggested that dosing digestate resulted in carbon and possibly nitrogen accumulation in soil.

Nitrogen dynamics in cropping systems under Mediterranean climate: a systemic analysis

Luis Lassaletta et al.

Summary: In Mediterranean cropping systems, sustainable nitrogen management requires practices to be specifically adapted to the local agro-environmental characteristics, with a special emphasis on water availability for rainfed and irrigated systems. This approach should also include a systemic analysis of nitrogen input into the territory driven by the configuration of the agro-food system.

Temporal dynamics of total and active prokaryotic communities in two Mediterranean orchard soils treated with solid anaerobic digestate or managed under no-tillage

Shamina Imran Pathan et al.

Summary: A field experiment was conducted in tree orchard soils in Southern Italy to investigate the impact of two improved tillage systems on the prokaryotic community composition. The study found that soil management induced compositional shifts in the microbial community balance, with different responses observed based on soil type and treatment, affecting both abundance and diversity of the prokaryotic communities.

The Potential of Digestate and the Liquid Fraction of Digestate as Chemical Fertiliser Substitutes under the RENURE Criteria

Summary: Digestate and the liquid fraction (LF) can be candidate RENURE fertilisers in nitrate vulnerable zones, with compliance rates for Cu and Zn meeting the criteria. LF is better suited as RENURE candidate fertilisers compared to unseparated digestate.

No-Till and Solid Digestate Amendment Selectively Affect the Potential Denitrification Activity in Two Mediterranean Orchard Soils

Michele Monti et al.

Summary: Our research investigated the short-term effects of no-tillage and organic amendment on denitrification in Mediterranean orchard soils. Results showed that both practices increased denitrifying enzyme activity, with dynamics varying based on soil type. No-tillage led to increased bulk density, reduced soil aeration, and promotion of soil microbial growth as main triggers for denitrification, while addition of digestate increased readily available C and N, with different effects in olive grove and orange orchard soils due to varying sorption and microbial efficiency.
